Rangers fans witnessed a game of two halves as Celtic came back to draw 2-2 in the William Hill Premiership on Sunday.

Youssef Chermiti’s magnificent brace gave the Gers a two-goal advantage going into the break at Ibrox on 1 March.

Danny Rohl must have surely been proud of his team’s performance in the opening 45 minutes, but Martin O’Neill got the better of the German manager after half-time.

The Light Blues had no answer for the Hoops’ marauding display as Kieran Tierney and Reo Hatate scored to secure a point in Govan, leaving the former Sheffield Wednesday boss with plenty of questions to answer.

Rangers game by numbers in second half vs Celtic

After a vintage first half from the Gers, fans in G51 were in high spirits as they dream of closing down Hearts at the top of the table.

However, what transpired after the break at Ibrox will leave a bad taste in the mouths of the home supporters who saw their team capitulate under pressure from Celtic.

After fairly equal possession in the opening 45 minutes, the Hoops were dominant on the ball in the second half, enjoying 58 per cent of it, as per Sofascore.

O’Neill’s team recorded an xG of 2.37, created seven big chances, had 16 shots, forced five saves from Jack Butland and completed around 82 per cent of their passes.

As for the Govan side, they completed just 66 per cent of their passes, won 46 per cent of the duels and won 33 per cent of their tackles.

Rohl will surely be fuming with his team’s slippiness on the ball after the break and undoubtedly can’t wait for Connor Barron to return from injury to help bring some form of control in the middle of the park for Celtic’s return to Ibrox on 8 March for the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup quarter final.

What did Kris Boyd have to say about the two halves in Old Firm derby?

Kris Boyd highlighted the lack of control from Rangers against Celtic, and speaking via the Daily Record on 4 March, he said, “If you look at Rangers in the first half, they were in total control of the game, total control of the ball every time it went up the pitch. The second half, it wasn’t the case.

“Rangers’ pass completion rate in the second half was only about 60 per cent successful. It was nowhere near what it was in the first half.”

Rohl brought Mohamed Diomande on to counter O’Neill’s tactics, but the Cote d’Ivoire international was unable to make any sort of impact.

Barron could potentially bring more solidity and grit to the Light Blues midfield playing with Nicolas Raskin and Tochi Chukwuani, but it remains to be seen whether the Scotland international will be fit enough by the end of the week.
