View: Rohl will be excited at result outside Scotland as Rangers UCL boost provided

Rangers could head straight into the Champions League league phase thanks to Olympiacos falling short in the Greek Super League.

It was a good weekend of results for Danny Rohl’s side, as Hearts failed to beat Livingston, with the Bears picking up a win of their own.

The gap to the Jam Tarts is now stood at just one point, and there is every chance they could nip the Edinburgh club to first place.

Of course, winning the title will put the champions into the Champions League.

However, depending on Olympiacos’ final position in the Greek Super League, Rangers’ Champions League prospects could have different paths if they win the Scottish Premiership.

Why Rangers want Olympiacos to miss out on the Greek Super League

Olympiacos have won just one game in their last five league matches, allowing AEK Athens to build quite the gap at the top of the Greek League.

Figures in Govan will certainly be keeping a close eye, as the ending to that campaign could affect the Bears.

That is because in the UEFA coefficient, Olympiacos are ahead of Rangers. If the Greek side win their league, they would qualify directly for the Champions League with no play-off rounds required.

If Rangers also win the league alongside the Piraeus-based club, the Gers would have to qualify for the league phase.

However, as it stands, AEK Athens are in first in the Greek top flight, which, if it remains the case and the Bears win the Scottish Premiership, Rohl’s side will directly qualify for the Champions League.

Those hopes were further boosted over the weekend as well, with AEK Athens taking on Olympiacos. The Double-Headed Eagle defeated the Red and Whites 1-0, extending their lead at the top to five points.

Overall, with Rangers beating Dundee United 4-2 and Hearts drawing, alongside the result in Greece, it has been a successful weekend for the Gers.

How many games left in the Greek Super League this season?

The Greek Super League has 32 games across a season, and there are just five fixtures left. Similarly to the Scottish system, the league does split for the final six games.

In the Greek system, the league splits into three, with the top four facing each other twice. With AEK Athens having a five-point lead, they certainly hold the advantage as it stands.

However, there could yet be plenty of twists and turns, with three of the top four capable of winning the league.

The Yellow-Blacks still have to play second-placed PAOK both home and away, while still having to travel away to face Olympiacos.

So, in what is quite a strange world, Rangers fans may be tuning into Greek football as well as Scottish football for the next few weeks.
