View: Rohl will have specific Rangers question to answer if they aren’t crowned champions

Danny Rohl needs to prove to Rangers chiefs he can set his team up better in defence, otherwise he may not be able to keep his job.

With five games to play this season, Rangers have a huge chance of being crowned Champions of Scotland for 2025-26.

Riding a four-game winning run, Rohl’s side continue to breathe hotly down the necks of Hearts, with their task being a simple one: just win your remaining five matches.

No Gers fan would argue that things haven’t improved under Rohl since he replaced Russell Martin back in October last year, and supporters were heard signing his name in the 6-3 win over Falkirk last time out.

However, he’s not the finished article yet as a coach either, and there remains one element of his Rangers team that could cost him and the Club dearly if not addressed in the title run-in.

Danny Rohl’s Rangers have conceded a lot of goals recently

Rohl has been urged to stick with a 4-4-2 after he switched to this formation at half-time in the aforementioned game against Falkirk.

However, this was no doubt a spontaneous decision, as he wouldn’t have been expecting to find his side 2-0 down after just 26 minutes.

Gers’ potent attack force were able to bail out a poor first-half performance in defence with five goals in the second half, but that’s not the first time this has happened in recent weeks.

Indeed, Rangers have conceded 12 times from their last seven league games, shipping three to Falkirk, two to Dundee United, one to Aberdeen and two to Celtic, Livingston and Hearts respectively.

Rohl’s side have conceded at least two goals in five of their last seven Premiership outings, and can perhaps count themselves very lucky that their attack has been firing during this time period.

This element of Rangers’ recent performances has maybe been lost slightly amidst the joy of all the goals being scored at the other end, but as we now enter the split, their defence is now facing five of the best attacking teams in the division.

Rohl to answer defensive questions if Rangers aren’t champions

So, it’s quite clear where Rangers’ strength lies at the moment, and that’s in attack.

And, conceding a collective six goals to Aberdeen, Dundee United and Falkirk over the last three games isn’t the ideal defensive form as you prepare to play five excellent attacking sides between now and the end of the season.

If Rangers are to fail in their quest to be crowned Champions of Scotland this season, then the brunt of the blame looks likely to fall on their defence, but Rohl would have to shoulder a lot of that too.

It’s not as if he’s got bad defensive options, quite the opposite in fact, but not being able to find a way to make his team less top-heavy would raise valid questions over his ability to set his team up at the back.

Rangers have played 14 Scottish Premiership games in the calendar year of 2026, and they’ve kept just five clean sheets: that’s not a particularly great return.

Rohl may have to rely on his forward line to fire his team to the title, but for the amount of quality options he’s got in defence, that shouldn’t really be the case.
