View: St Mirren vs Rangers ratings: Tuur Rommens excellent, Youssef Chermiti rare off day

Rangers ran out 1-0 winners over St Mirren at The SMISA Stadium on Sunday.

It certainly wasn’t a clash for the ages between St Mirren and Rangers, but it was three points nonetheless for Danny Rohl’s side in Paisley.

Rohl made three changes to the side that were beaten in the Scottish Cup by Celtic last time out, with James Tavernier, Djeidi Gassama and Tochi Chukwuani coming in for Andreas Skov Olsen, Dujon Sterling and Mohamed Diomande respectively.

However, it was Tuur Rommens’ first-half goal that earned Rangers the win over St Mirren, closing the gap to leaders Hearts to three points after their 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Tuur Rommens gets off the mark for Rangers v St Mirren

Rommens has been excellent for Rangers since signing from Westerlo this winter, and has already ousted Jayden Meghoma from the starting XI at left-back.

However, since recording an assist on his Gers debut against Kilmarnock on 4 February, the 22-year-old hasn’t registered another goal contribution since: something his performances haven’t deserved.

That’s no longer the case though, as his well-taken finish against St Mirren handed Rangers all three points in Paisley, in what was an all-round top showing from the flying full-back.

After some nice work down the right by Nicolas Raskin, his wonderful left-footed cross curled all the way to the far side of the six-yard box, begging to for a Rangers player to get on the end of it and turn it in.

That’s exactly what Rommens did, who after being left unmarked off the back shoulder of Richard King, the Belgian had to leap to side-foot the ball past Shamal George in the Buddies’ goal.

It wasn’t just his goal that made him a clear man of the match candidate on Sunday, as Rommens was a constant thorn in St Mirren’s side down the left, creating a host of chances with some excellent deliveries into the box.

He was also rock-solid in defence too, winning the majority of his individual battles and duels, stifling any attacking opportunity St Mirren had down that side.

Youssef Chermiti was nowhere to be seen vs St Mirren

Youssef Chermiti has been a superb signing for Rangers this season, with nine goals and two assists under his belt this term.

However, the Portuguese striker was off his game against St Mirren, and in truth, was never really in the match in Paisley, coasting through the game without leaving his impression on it.

As per Sofascore, the 21-year-old registered just two shots against the Buddies, with neither of those being on target as well as missing one big chance.

Chermiti also took just 33 touches in the match, gave the ball away 15 times, completed just 50 per cent of his passes accurately in the St Mirren half and made only one defensive contribution respectively.

It was a rare off day for the striker, which he can be afforded given how good he’s been for Gers this season, but Rohl is sure to be informing him that he expects a lot more from him in the coming weeks.
