View: Tottenham could be set for first mistake of the summer as talks set for 14.5% dud

Tottenham Hotspur are said to be keen on signing Joao Palhinha permanently this summer.

The only thing that Spurs need to focus on right now is keeping themselves in the Premier League, and with just five games to go, their chances of doing so are fading away.

However, regardless of the outcome of their relegation battle, the North Londoners are set for a huge summer of recruitment.

Several players will move on from Tottenham, while a whole host of fresh quality will be needed if Roberto De Zerbi is to be a success.

But with reports claiming Tottenham will look to sign Palhinha, they may be set to make their first mistake already.

Stats expose why Joao Palhinha transfer would be a mistake

Tottenham have lacked some severe quality in midfield this season, with Conor Gallagher, Yves Bissouma and Palhinha himself having failed to impress.

But for the Lilywhites to be on the hunt for a permanent deal for the latter is baffling, especially given the lack of importance he has had this season.

Palhinha ranks among the bottom 14.5 per cent of midfielders for his pass completion, which comes in at a measly 80.2 per cent.

With Tottenham often expected to take control of the game possession-wise, that has already proved to be a huge problem.

He averages just 32 completed passes per 90, which again places him among the bottom 25.23 per cent of midfielders in the Premier League.

It’s clear that Palhinha has nothing to offer on the ball, and while he may be a solid option for protecting the backline, that is simply not enough to warrant the move.

How much would Tottenham pay for Palhinha?

Spurs agreed an option to buy Palhinha with Bayern, with it reported that it would cost them a fee in the region of £26million.

However, the North Londoners are due for talks with Bayern to renegotiate that fee.

If successful, Spurs may push ahead with a permanent deal, but if the German giants refuse to lower the price, it’s claimed that a deal is unlikely to happen this summer.
