Mikel Arteta could already be searching for a Viktor Gyokeres replacement as Arsenal push ahead in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal fans were furious with Gyokeres as the big-money striker flopped yet again against Nottingham Forest, though he did make amends with a stunning finish against Inter Milan midweek.

After arriving from Sporting CP for £55million, many expected him to be the Gunners’ own version of Erling Haaland, who is starring for Man City, with a total of 150 goals in 177 appearances.

The 27-year-old scored 97 goals in 102 games for the Portuguese giants before his big move, but it has not worked out for the star striker, with fans of various Premier League clubs taking hits at Gyokeres.

In fact, Arsenal supporters are more confident in Gabriel Jesus starting against Man United on Sunday, 25 January, which goes to show exactly what the fanbase thinks about him.

The summer signing is already running out of time to prove himself worthy of a Premier League-winning team, and that could be accelerated by the latest transfer news emerging out of Spain.

With Andrea Berta now in charge of transfers at the Emirates Stadium, fans have become much happier about some of the deals being done, and there could be a hugely controversial one on the cards.

According to ESPN (23 January), the club from North London are exploring the possibility of launching a summer move for Atletico Madrid‘s Julian Alvarez, formerly of Man City, with his price tag set at £86.7million.

He was a star under Pep Guardiola, becoming a fan-favourite before making the switch to La Liga, and supporters at the Etihad Stadium would be fuming to see him announced at the Emirates instead.

It remains to be seen exactly how the player feels about a return to the Premier League, but there is no doubt that the fans of his former team would instantly turn against him if the deal were to happen.

Gyokeres is unlikely to be put in an ideal situation either, with Arteta needing to start him in most games to justify the money spent, which would mean fewer chances for the Sweden international to impress.

It is all highly hypothetical, of course, but if the Gunners are to move for Alvarez, they may need to find a new home for the centre-forward, who arrived just a matter of months ago.
