Vincent Kompany odds slashed to become new Man City manager after Pep Guardiola exit latest

Vincent Kompany is among the favourites to take over from Pep Guardiola at Manchester City this summer.

It still remains unclear whether the Spaniard will step down in the coming weeks, with a decision to be made following the end of the season.

Guardiola still has a year left on his Man City contract, but there has been mounting speculation that he will call time on his tenure this summer.

Bayern Munich manager Kompany is under contract with the German champions until 2029, and could still win the treble this season.

Enzo Maresca has also been tipped among the contenders to be Man City’s next manager, after he was dismissed from Chelsea in January.

Vincent Kompany in race to replace Pep Guardiola

Football Insider revealed in March that Kompany is Man City’s top choice to replace Guardiola this summer amid his exploits in Germany.

The Belgian’s Bayern have been scintillating to watch this season, winning 13 of their last 14 games and scoring goals at will – 105 in 29 Bundesliga games so far, a league record.

A brilliant late turnaround at the Allianz Arena this week saw them beat Real Madrid to set up a Champions League semi-final against PSG, and they beat RB Leipzig in February to get to the final four in the DFB Pokal, too.

There will, in all likelihood, already be silverware to celebrate this weekend, however. Borussia Dortmund’s defeat at Hoffenheim on Saturday means just a draw against Stuttgart on Sunday will see a 34th Bundesliga title lifted by Bayern.

It has been a staggering tenure so far for Kompany, who was seen as a surprising appointment when he was taken from a relegated Burnley team.

But one major bookmaker has tipped the 40-year-old to return to Man City this summer at 2/1, while Maresca continues to lead the race at 1/1.

Could Guardiola and Kompany switch?

While many suspect that Guardiola will look to have a break from management when he calls time on his Man City career, it cannot be ruled out that he will just want a break from the Premier League.

Should Kompany replace him, there would be an open seat in the dugout at Bayern, where the Spaniard spent three years between 2013 and 2016.

The 55-year-old lifted the Bundesliga three times there, and won the German Cup twice, but he never managed to lift the Champions League.

With Bayern well and truly on the up under Kompany, Guardiola may well spy some unfinished business in Munich.
