Arthur Okonkwo: Manchester United’s Sesko and Mbuemo to test Super Eagles prospect in July

Super Eagles prospect Arthur Okonkwo is set to face some of the world’s most elite attackers this July, as Wrexham prepares for a high-profile pre-season friendly against Manchester United, Soccernet.ng reports.

Okonkwo has been a standout performer for Wrexham this season, firmly establishing himself between the sticks in the Championship after helping the club secure promotion from League One last year. The 24-year-old has featured in 38 of Wrexham's 41 league games, recording an impressive 10 clean sheets.

Wrexham continues to be one of the greatest stories in global football. Having achieved three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship, they currently sit 7th in the table — just two points behind Southampton in the final playoff spot.

With five games remaining and a game in hand for the Saints, The Reds remain firmly in the hunt for a historic move to the Premier League.

Arthur Okonkwo in the Spotlight Following Nigeria Commitment

While his club performances have been very good Okonkwo’s international future has dominated recent headlines. Born in England to Nigerian parents, the goalkeeper represented England at the youth level but never received a senior call-up.

On Tuesday, April 7, it was officially confirmed that his switch to represent Nigeria has been finalized. This paves the way for a potential call-up to the Super Eagles camp for the upcoming June friendlies. Given Stanley Nwabali’s recent inactivity, coach Eric Chelle will likely be eager to integrate Okonkwo and assess his quality firsthand.

Wrexham Set for Manchester United Showdown

With the current season already in its home stretch, Wrexham are already laying the groundwork for the next campaign. This morning, the club announced a friendly against Premier League giants Manchester United, scheduled for July 18 at the Helsinki Olympic Stadium.

Despite a turbulent few years, the Red Devils remain one of Europe’s heavyweights. Their frontline boasts significant talent, including stars like Amad Diallo, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo.

Okonkwo is expected to be a key figure in this matchup. Having already put in a decent performance against Chelsea earlier this season, a clash with Manchester United is a challenge he will certainly relish.

If he joins the national team in June, it is unlikely Coach Chelle will immediately start him against top-tier opponents like Poland or Portugal.

As such, the July friendly against the Red Devils will provide Nigerian fans with a perfect opportunity to gauge the quality of their new number-one contender.
