Aston Villa: Unai Emery must take a closer look at Jhon Lucumi in clash vs Bologna
Aston Villa have the chance to scout one of the most in-demand centre-backs in Europe up close with Jhon Lucumi set to feature for Bologna during their Europa League clash.
Lucumi was linked with a move to Villa last summer after a standout 2024-25 campaign in which he helped Bologna to Coppa Italia glory.
The Colombian international stayed at the club for this term and has continued to start regularly as they seek a Europa League triumph this season.
Lucumi has continued to be linked with a move away from Bologna as the summer window approaches, with the likes of Sunderland and Roma reportedly interested.
Aston Villa’s transfer plans could include a new centre-back signing ahead of next season, with Lucumi potentially set to be watched closely by Unai Emery and their scouts when they face off this week.

Villa could reignite interest in Jhon Lucumi after Bologna clashes
Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport claimed last June that Villa had submitted an official bid to try and sign Bologna centre half Lucumi ahead of the competition.
Clearly, a deal did not materialise, but he was given the chance to impress against the Villans earlier in the season as the two sides faced off during the Europa League’s league stage.

Lucumi had a decent game, winning four of his six duels and completing 45 passes as Villa came away with a 1-0 win through John McGinn’s strike.
He has continued to progress well in Italy, and Villa should still have their eye on him as Emery potentially changes up his centre-back options this summer.
Villa have been linked to several other central defenders, but sources have told Football Insider that Newcastle are leading the race for Marcos Senesi despite interest from the Second City club.
Lucumi is likely to start for Bologna during their UEL quarter-final clash this week, and a strong performance could convince Emery that he is what they need for next season.
How to watch Bologna vs Aston Villa this week
Villa are aiming to make a second European semi-final in three seasons against Bologna, with the first leg of their quarter-final tie kicking off at 8pm on Thursday, 9 April at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.
The game will be aired live on TNT Sports 2 and online on HBO Max UK, with coverage set to start at 7pm.
Villa will hope for a positive result against Lucumi’s side, with the second leg set to take place on home turf next week on 16 April.
