Club adviser: Man United set to announce big-name player's new contract imminently - 'It's basically done'

Manchester United could promptly confirm that Kobbie Mainoo has signed a new contract to remain at the club.

That is the view of former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking to Football Insider, who believes a deal is “done” for Mainoo to stay at Old Trafford.

Interim manager Michael Carrick said he was “positive” that Mainoo would sign a new contract, with his current deal expiring in 2027.

The 20-year-old is seen as one of the club’s brightest prospects, but the midfielder was on the verge of leaving after being frozen out under former boss Ruben Amorim.

Man United now have no plans to sell Mainoo, who has been revitalised since Carrick took charge, and has fought his way back into the England squad.

Kobbie Mainoo backed to have ‘long future’ with Man United

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes the Man United fans will be most pleased about Mainoo staying at the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks it would have been a “mistake” allowing Mainoo to leave.

Kobbie Mainoo’s 2025-26 Premier League stats at Manchester United.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It’s basically done already, and the fans will be pleased to see it.

“They’re begging for him to be back on the pitch as well. It’s as good as done. They’re not going to make a mistake like what almost happened with Mainoo going earlier in the season under Amorim.

“They need to tie him up. He is a player that could have a future, a long future with Man United and the fans would like to see it, and it’s basically done, so I expect an announcement very soon.”

Michael Carrick’s future at Man United uncertain

It was believed that Carrick would be the favourite to land the position of Man United manager on a permanent basis, but that might not now be the case.

Former chief scout at Old Trafford Mick Brown told Football Insider that Man United have doubts over Carrick following their 2-1 defeat at home to Leeds.

That followed a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth, as performance levels have dipped in the last two games under Carrick, meaning the club are continuing to explore other options.

Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann is believed to be a contender, whilst a move could also be made for former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino.
