Elite club adviser urges Celtic to halt new transfer advances after failed 2026 approach

Celtic should continue to scout the market rather than make a move for Sheffield United striker Tyrese Campbell.

That is the view of former Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, amid interest from Celtic in the 26-year-old.

Sheffield United will have to make a decision on Campbell in the summer with his contract at Bramall Lane expiring in 2027.

Celtic will be targeting a new striker, with the futures of Kelechi Iheanacho, Junior Adamu, Tomas Cvancara and Johnny Kenny all uncertain.

It is set to be a busy summer transfer window for Celtic, with strengthening their attacking options high on their list of priorities.

Celtic warned over Tyrese Campbell move

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – states that Glasgow rivals Rangers could also do better than signing Campbell.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness doesn’t believe moving to Scotland is right for Campbell’s career.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I think he’s been scouted by both the Old Firm clubs and I don’t see him making that move.

“I just don’t think he’s quite the quality that we’re looking for at Celtic just now. I think that they still need to keep looking, and Rangers can also afford to go for a younger, higher quality striker as well.

“He hasn’t set the world on fire at Sheffield United, and I don’t know if the move to Scotland is really the right thing for him. I’d have to look further into him, but my sources have said maybe not this one.”

Managerial favourites could bring own strikers to Parkhead

Celtic’s pursuit of a new striker could depend on who the club appoint to become their next permanent manager at the end of the season.

Motherwell boss Jens Berthel Askou may look to bring Tawanda Maswanhise with him to Celtic Park, with the 23-year-old having scored 16 Scottish Premiership goals this season.

Wyness though revealed to Football Insider that Robbie Keane could now be the favourite for Celtic’s managerial vacancy.

Keane is currently in Hungary managing Ferencvaros, where 21-year-old forward Zsombor Gruber, who has scored nine league goals this season, could be a smart addition for the future.
