English manager issues late update on signing player from Rangers before 7pm

Joe Rothwell is inching closer to a Rangers departure before the winter transfer window slams shut.

Rothwell joined Rangers on a three-year deal last summer but so far, the move has not worked out.

The midfielder has started just eight Scottish Premiership games this season and does not appear to be part of manager Danny Rohl’s plans going forward.

This is in stark contrast to how he was used under former boss Russell Martin, who played the former Leeds United man on 17 occasions in all competitions.

Since his sacking in October, Rothwell has played just three times and now an Ibrox exit is very much becoming a reality.

Joe Rothwell to swap Rangers for Sheffield United

According to reports, ex-Bournemouth star Rothwell is nearing a switch to Championship side Sheffield United.

The 31-year-old is primed to complete a medical at the Blades, as Chris Wilder’s side try to mount a late push for the play-offs.

While some managers choose not to get involved in transfer speculation, manager Wilder has addressed the matter head on.

Not only is Rothwell on course to move to Bramall Lane, Wilder admitted he is a long-term admirer of the ex-Manchester United youngster.

He told reporters ahead of United’s Championship clash with Oxford United on Tuesday: “Joe’s in situ. Hopefully, we can get that one over the line.

He’s somebody that gives us that strength in depth in the midfield department, and someone I’ve liked for quite a long time. So, he’ll bring good competition and balance in there, if we get it over the line.”

Rothwell played an important role in Leeds’ Championship-winning campaign last season.

Do Rangers need more signings before the window closes?

Many Rangers fans have called on the club to strengthen their squad after a goalless draw with Hibernian on Sunday.

That result saw Rangers drop to third behind Celtic on goals scored, while leaders Hearts maintain a six-point lead at the top of the table.

Rohl’s side have the fourth-best goalscoring record in the Scottish Premiership but if they are to win their first league title since 2021, they may need more firepower.

It seems they are on the cusp of recruiting Hansa Rostock striker Ryan Naderi before the window slams shut but Rangers’ pursuit of Southampton’s Cameron Archer may be put on hold.

Incidentally, it seems most of Rangers’ business will involve players leaving the club before the 11pm deadline.
