Everton star rewarded by announcement away from Hill Dickinson Stadium today
Idrissa Gueye has been excellent for club and country over the last year.
The Senegal international has made 224 appearances for the Toffees over two different spells, and he’s been a huge driving factor in maintaining their Premier League status in the past.
Gueye has formed a brilliant partnership with James Garner in midfield, and the 36-year-old is ageing like fine wine at the heart of Everton‘s midfield.
However, Gueye has been on international duty with Senegal over the past month, and it’s safe to say he enjoyed incredible success at AFCON.
Idrissa Gueye named in AFCON Team of the Tournament
Gueye won AFCON with Senegal in the most dramatic circumstances by beating hosts Morocco 1-0 in the final.
Gueye was named in the official Team of the Tournament, alongside three of his international teammates.
The AFCON X account announced this on Wednesday, and it’s nothing less than the Everton man deserved.
After walking off the pitch in the final following a controversial penalty decision, he went on to provide the assist for Pape Gueye’s extra-time winning goal.
The 36-year-old played every single minute in the competition and was a key reason as to why Senegal won their second AFCON trophy after achieving success in 2021.
According to Sofascore, he never produced a match rating that was below 7.0.

Although Gueye will get the majority of the plaudits, Iliman Ndiaye also had an impressive tournament.
How did Iliman Ndiaye fare at AFCON?
Ndiaye’s excellent run of form for Everton has coincided with fans believing that they could challenge for Europe under David Moyes.
He has arguably been the Toffees’ best player this season, and his performances have proved to be incredibly hard to replace.
Ndiaye’s only goal came in the 1-0 win over Mali on 9 January, and perhaps he would have wanted a better return from the six games he featured in.
Stat Ndiaye Appearances 6 Goals 1 Assists 0 Chances created 9 Successful diribbles 10
Ultimately, he played a huge role in his side’s winning run, and it represents the first trophy of his senior career.
Both players will return to L4 as heroes, and Moyes will be hoping to see them excel during the second half of the campaign.
