Ex-Aberdeen CEO suggests UEFA 'ban' after Rangers latest

UEFA should introduce stricter rules on multi-club ownerships after Rangers’ latest off-field move.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after Rangers announced two departures from their board.

Rangers and Leeds are both owned by 49ers enterprises, and the two clubs could both qualify and meet in the Europa League next season.

UEFA told clubs to comply with multi-club rules by March 1st, with Rangers acting in their financial interests to avoid any threat of not being able to compete in Europe.

UEFA ‘conflicted’ over multi-club issues

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes UEFA would find it “very hard” to ban multi-club groups.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks Rangers chiefs stepping away from the club due to their involvement in Leeds won’t make much difference.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “I don’t think it really makes that much of a difference, but it sort of shows they’re doing something.

“And they’ve got to come to grips with this as a bigger problem. Whether they ban them overall at some stage, I think it would be very hard because there’s now about 70 different multi-club groups.

“So it would be very hard to ban them. But there may be some strict laws coming in, and I’m sure they’re thinking about it going forward. But also, on the other hand it’s bringing a lot of money into the game.

“So they’re probably conflicted in what they’re thinking about the whole multi-club ownership issue. But it’s one to watch, and we’ll certainly be watching it in the days ahead.”

James Tavernier reveals contract stance

Sources have told Football Insider that Rangers captain James Tavernier is keen to stay at the club beyond this season.

Tavernier’s contract expires at the end of the campaign, and the 34-year-old has not been a regular starter under Danny Rohl.

Rangers are still yet to offer Tavernier a new deal, with Rohl set to be busy rebuilding the squad in the summer to push for the Scottish Premiership title again next season.
