Ex-AVFC employee reacts to Douglas Luiz rejecting Chelsea for Aston Villa return
Aston Villa have beaten competition from Chelsea to secure the loan signing of Douglas Luiz.
That is according to ex-Aston Villa, Everton, and Aberdeen chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, who believes it is a good move for Unai Emery’s side to re-sign Luiz.
Luiz is set to return to Aston Villa for a second spell, with his loan at Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest from Juventus expected to be terminated.
Chelsea also registered their interest in Luiz, with the 27-year-old having struggled for game time at Nottingham Forest this season.
Aston Villa ’emerge very quickly’ to secure signing
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – thinks it is the right move for Luiz to join Aston Villa over Chelsea.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness states that Aston Villa were quick to secure a deal for the midfielder.
He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “It will be Aston Villa. They emerged very quickly as the front-runner and I think Chelsea still have an embarrassment of riches in that area, and so I don’t think Luiz was the right deal for them.
“But I think, as I say, for all the reasons, it makes sense for him to go back to Villa. He knows the area, he knows the club, and he will work well within that squad as well just now. I think it might have been a bit of a stretch for him to work at Chelsea.”

Aston Villa suffer Youri Tielemans blow
Emery may have acted quickly to secure a move for Luiz due to an injury sustained by Youri Tielemans against Newcastle.
Tielemans could be set for a spell on the sidelines, with Emery already without Boubacar Kamara and John McGinn.
The 28-year-old has started the last ten games in all competitions for Aston Villa, becoming a key component in their midfield.
