Ex-refs chief instantly reacts to Eintracht Frankfurt vs Tottenham controversy

Referee Jesus Gil reached the correct decision as he opted to rule out a potential Tottenham goal during their 2-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt on Wednesday night.

That is according to ex-FIFA referee and former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett, who has exclusively told Football Insider that the Spanish official was right to rule out Xavi Simons’ second-minute goal.

Tottenham’s Champions League campaign has provided respite from their domestic struggles this season, and they successfully booked their place in the last 16 thanks to goals from Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke.

Thomas Frank’s position has been under heavy scrutiny at Tottenham in recent weeks, but he has now achieved his first remit in their continental campaign, with his team safely through to the next stage.

Keith Hackett hails Jesus Gil decision

Gil endured a mixed night in charge of Tottenham’s game, as he made questionable decisions on several minor incidents throughout the game.

However, Hackett feels that he dealt with the game’s major moment of controversy in the correct manner and ultimately reached the right outcome.

Simons thought he had put Spurs ahead in the early stages as he turned the ball into the back of the net, but Gil was on hand to swiftly pull the play back for a foul in the build-up.

The man in the middle penalised Destiny Udogie for a pull on Frankfurt defender Aurele Amenda, which appeared to prevent him from cutting out the through ball that set Kolo Muani away inside the box.

Hackett was keen to praise the decision from the referee, as he told Football Insider that Udogie’s grab at his opponent was fully intentional after analysing footage of the challenge.

“The officials have done well to detect and penalise a deliberate pull by Udogie in the build-up,” he said.

Tottenham ‘will get Andy Robertson deal done’ on one condition

Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider on Tuesday that Tottenham “will get a deal done” for Andy Robertson, provided Liverpool can find a replacement in the coming days.

Time is running out for Premier League clubs to add the finishing touches to their squads before Monday night’s transfer deadline, and Frank and Co. have identified Robertson as a key last-minute target.

The 31-year-old is out of contract at Liverpool at the end of the season, but Tottenham are looking to snatch him before he becomes a free agent in the summer.

The two clubs had agreed in principle to a £5million deal, but Liverpool pulled the plug due to their inability to recall Kostas Tsimikas from his loan spell at Roma.

However, Wyness feels that a deal could still be done before the deadline, provided that Liverpool can find a replacement, as the saga looks set to go down to the wire.
