Exclusive: Man United add Fulham player to summer shortlist as Liverpool back out of race

Manchester United have added Fulham’s Antonee Robinson to their shortlist of left-back targets for this summer, sources have told Football Insider.

The Red Devils are in the market for an addition on the left side of their defence, and the 28-year-old is one of a number of candidates who are likely to be considered ahead of next season.

Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the American in recent weeks, but sources have now indicated that he is seen as being too old to fit in with their current transfer model.

Robinson is understood to be content at Craven Cottage at the moment, and Fulham would not consider selling him on the cheap in the upcoming window.

Man United’s transfer plans have seen him identified as a target to come in and bolster their defence, but they are also aware that Fulham have stood in the way of him moving on before.

Man United ready to finally secure Antonee Robinson deal

Robinson has been one of the Premier League’s hottest properties outside the established ‘top six’ in recent seasons, but a move to one of England’s elite clubs has eluded him so far in his career.

The defender is now into his sixth full season at Fulham, and he caught the eye as one of the top-flight’s strongest creators last term, as he ended the campaign with 10 league assists to his name.

He has endured an injury-hit season this time around and is still waiting for his first goal contribution of the campaign.

However, that hasn’t stopped United from showing an interest in him once again, as they bid to try and strengthen their depth in the left-back slot, which has become something of a problem area for them.

Michael Carrick has preferred to use Patrick Dorgu in a more advanced left-wing role of late, and with Tyrell Malacia out of contract at the end of the season, Luke Shaw looks set to be left as the only senior option in that position.

Robinson is a clear candidate to step into Old Trafford ahead of next season, but it remains to be seen exactly how difficult Fulham will make it for a deal to be struck.

Lisandro Martinez’s future in question

Former United chief scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Lisandro Martinez’s future at United may be called into question this summer, amid ongoing concerns over his injury record.

The Argentine has started just nine Premier League games amid consistent injury problems this term, and the club’s former recruitment boss believes that will have put a question mark over his long-term future.

Brown insisted that it is no good for his former club if Martinez is only able to play a handful of games on each occasion before breaking down again.

He added that they need players who can be relied upon at the heart of their defence, and with the 28-year-old’s lack of availability, it could spell the beginning of the end for him at Old Trafford.
