Expert: Guardiola 'is not happy' at Man City and could quit sooner than expected

Pep Guardiola is no longer happy at Man City and has been left frustrated by a disappointing couple of seasons at the Etihad.

Guardiola’s side drew 2-2 with Tottenham last time out despite having led 2-0 at half-time after two second-half goals from Dominic Solanke.

Amid controversy surrounding Solanke’s first goal, and an outburst at referees from captain Rodri, the manager is believed to be growing tired behind the scenes.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that City appear to be losing their usual unbeatable feel which has surrounded them during their success.

Should City fail to win any trophies for a second consecutive season, after losing the FA Cup final to Crystal Palace last year, it could push Guardiola out.

Pep Guardiola could quit Man City after new claim

Brown warned Football Insider on 19 January that Guardiola could leave Man City amid whispers that he could step away from management sooner rather than later.

The boss’ current contract at the Etihad is set to expire in 2027, but there are growing suggestions that this could be his final season in charge.

I think it’s quite clear Guardiola isn’t happy at Man City,” Brown told Football Insider.

“We saw it last year when they had that massive drop in form, he was frustrated and annoyed and he couldn’t seem to find a way to turn things around.

“A similar situation seems to be happening now, they’re throwing away two-goal leads and they can’t seem to find any consistency in their form.

“City don’t feel like they have that unbeatable air about them any more, they’re falling behind in the league and they might fail to win a trophy again.

“I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he walked away at the end of the season, regardless of when his contract expires.

“There’s been lots of talk about his future and normally with this sort of thing there’s no smoke without fire, so it will be one to keep an eye on.”

Man City lining up Guardiola replacements

Amid ongoing speculation surrounding the manager’s future, City have begun assessing potential replacements in case they are forced to act quickly.

Football Insider exclusively revealed on 3 February that Vincent Kompany is Man City’s top target to replace Guardiola if they can prise him away from Bayern Munich.

Kompany is enjoying a strong season with the Bundesliga champions, who currently sit six points clear at the top of the league and have lost just one game.

Enzo Maresca, who worked at City as Guardiola’s assistant, informed Chelsea that he had spoken to representatives of City before his departure in January.

Xabi Alonso will also be of interest to the Premier League giants following his departure from Real Madrid, but is on the radar at Liverpool as well.
