Ezri Konsa ‘to be axed’ – Aston Villa fans explode after they saw against Chelsea

Aston Villa fans have ripped into Ezri Konsa after his poor performance in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea on Wednesday night.

Villa’s Champions League qualification hopes took a blow as Chelsea emerged 4-1 victors in a frantic clash in the Second City.

Douglas Luiz got Unai Emery’s side up and running inside two minutes, but they were behind at half time as Joao Pedro netted twice before the break.

Pedro notched his hat-trick just after the hour mark, after Cole Palmer had put the Blues 3-1 ahead, with Liam Rosenior’s side now just three points and one place behind Villa.

Villa have a week off before facing Lille in the Europa League next Thursday, and many supporters are calling for Konsa to be dropped from the starting lineup after his struggles against Chelsea.

Konsa was partly at fault for Chelsea’s equaliser, as he kept Malo Gusto onside and then allowed Pedro to run free on goal before tapping the Frenchman’s low cross into the net.

He struggled to keep his line with Tyrone Mings all evening, and failed to win either ground or aerial duel that he attempted in the game.

The England centre-back will have felt that he should have done more to stop Pedro scoring Chelsea’s second, then was caught horribly out of position for their fourth goal on the counter-attack.

Konsa caused anger among Villa fans last week for confronting them after a 2-0 loss at Wolves, and many supporters took to X after the Chelsea match to note that he needs to concentrate more on on-field matters.

One said: “Don’t be surprised if there’s no Konsa next season. This seems like a player who’s heads been turned to me.”

Another added: “That’s absolutely pathetic defending from Konsa, goals been coming for about 15 minutes.”

While one wrote: “Can we all agree that Konsa isn’t a worthy captain, he should be dropped for Lindelof.”

Villa to let Ollie Watkins leave after dismal performance vs Chelsea

While Konsa certainly had a night to forget, his teammate, Watkins, will have wanted the ground to swallow him up on the pitch at Villa Park.

The out-of-form England man thought he had netted his third goal of 2026 to put his side back in front, but was ruled offside after a VAR review, and he went on to spurn numerous great chances to grab a goal.

Sources have told Football Insider that Villa are set to sell Watkins this summer, and plan to accept a reduced fee of around £30million for his services.

It is no wonder that Emery is content to see him leave, and based on what he showed against Chelsea, Villa may even struggle to sell the 30-year-old for such a price.
