Florian Wirtz sends ‘disappointing’ Champions League message as Liverpool slip up to Galatasaray

Florian Wirtz has made a promise to the Liverpool supporters after a surprise 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League.

Arne Slot’s side were far from their best in Turkey on Tuesday, 10 March, with former Premier League midfielder Mario Lemina pouncing on early slack defending to head home from close range.

That turned out to be the only goal of the game, with the Reds unable to fire back despite hundreds of millions-worth of players on the pitch, and it could have been even worse for Liverpool.

Liverpool must face Galatasaray in their round of 16 second leg on Wednesday, 18 March, and Wirtz has vowed to “fight back” after the disappointment of returning to England with a loss.

Florian Wirtz promises much better to the Liverpool faithful

The Reds had more than enough chances to equalise away from home, but after mistakes from both Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk, Galatasaray will be frustrated to only win by one goal.

Taking to Instagram stories after the game (10 March), Wirtz wrote: “Very disappointing game and result, but it’s not done yet, and we will fight back next week at Anfield,” with a 100 emoji.

It has been a strange season for the Merseysiders, with Slot under growing pressure to improve results at Anfield, and the round of 16 second leg could be vital for his future at the club.

Should they manage to turn the game around at Anfield, the Reds will come up against either PSG or Chelsea, so it doesn’t get any easier for the team sitting sixth in the Premier League table.

Liverpool star one of the brighter performers away from Anfield

Despite a slow start to life in England, Wirtz is quickly becoming an undroppable presence in the team, and was sorely missed by his teammates while out injured recently.

In 73 minutes against Galatasaray, the German international saw two shots saved, missed two big chances, completed two of his four dribbles and made seven passes into the final third [FotMob].

He also made four tackles and four recoveries, as well as entering into 12 ground duels in Turkey.

Despite the disappointing performance, it was not a disastrous result. The Reds have a huge chance to make amends next week, and Wirtz needs to play a huge role in that.
