Fresh Conor Gallagher verdict from Spain proves why Tottenham should never have signed him
Conor Gallagher has come under fresh criticism for his spell at Atletico Madrid, piling on the misery after his difficult start to life at Tottenham Hotspur.
Gallagher arrived at Spurs from Atletico in a £36million deal during the winter transfer window, but the midfielder has so far failed to justify that hefty price tag.
On Tuesday night, he will return to Atletico for the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie with his spot in Igor Tudor’s starting XI in doubt.
Now, the press in Spain have brutally questioned his technical ability, raising awkward questions over whether Tottenham should have steered clear of signing him.

What have Marca said about Conor Gallagher?
It is perhaps no real surprise that Gallagher has failed to find his feet in North London.
Thomas Frank and Tudor have played him in a variety of positions, a tactical gambit which has affected his confidence and, most importantly, which doesn’t play to his strengths.
He has been dragged off before the hour mark in his last two starts, while Jamie O’Hara lambasted his display against Crystal Palace.
But, two months on from his return to England, Spanish outlet Marca have issued a new report on his time at the Metropolitano, titled ‘The pitbull who never bit in red and white’.
Damningly, they have claimed that Gallagher “showed more weaknesses than strengths”, adding that his “technical level made it difficult for him to adapt to the system.”
While the 26-year-old was praised for his exemplary attitude in Madrid, the fact that he has been slammed for not controlling Atletico’s midfield reflects poorly on Tottenham.
Tottenham’s Gallagher swoop was a panic buy
Gallagher’s surprise arrival perfectly encapsulates their dreadful winter business.
Atletico were all too happy to ship out the midfielder, and Spurs were drawn in hook, line and sinker, seemingly in an attempt to placate frustrated supporters.
It quickly became obvious that Gallagher did not suit their style of play, and his failure to wrestle games by the scruff of the neck has cost his side on too many occasions.
Putting him on a reported weekly wage of £200,000, making him the highest earner in the squad, only serves to underline the lack of joined-up thinking at board level.
The hierarchy will be deeply fortunate if mistakes of this magnitude don’t lead to relegation.
