Galatasaray target Nigerian youngster who made UCL history against Barcelona
Turkish giants Galatasaray are keeping a close eye on the situation of teenage Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena, Soccernet.ng reports.
The reigning Super Lig champions are weighing up a move for Ilenikhena as questions grow around the youngster's early spell in Saudi Arabia.
The 19-year-old, who joined Al-Ittihad in February 2026, has made five appearances without scoring. That slow start has led to some internal concern at the club, despite the significant investment made to bring him in. He signed a contract running until June 2029, after a deal worth around €33 million from AS Monaco.
Reports in Turkey suggest Galatasaray’s interest is still at an early stage, but it is not without direction. Club officials are understood to see Ilenikhena as a high-upside attacker who could benefit from a return to a more competitive European environment.

A loan deal is one option being considered if his situation does not improve quickly, although a permanent move could also come into play should Al-Ittihad soften their stance.
The timing of this interest is significant. Galatasaray are currently working to secure the long-term future of Victor Osimhen, who has attracted attention from Europe’s elite, including Real Madrid and Barcelona. Monitoring a young striker like Ilenikhena fits into a wider strategy of planning ahead, ensuring the club has options in place should their star forward depart.
Ilenikhena: From Lagos to getting on Galatasaray's radar
Ilenikhena’s career trajectory explains why clubs remain willing to be patient. Born in Lagos and raised in France, he first made headlines at youth level before becoming Ligue 2's youngest ever goalscorer in the colours of Amiens SC at age 16.
He left for Belgium shortly after, making his breakthrough with Royal Antwerp. His impact there was immediate, earning him a move to Monaco in 2024 for €20 million.

It was at Royal Antwerp that he became the youngest Nigerian-born player to score in the UEFA Champions League (17 years, 119 days). That historic strike came as the winning goal for Royal Antwerp in a 3-2 victory against Barcelona. It was the Belgian side's first-ever win in Europe's premier competition.
Standing at 1.85 metres, Ilenikhena combines physical presence with pace and a powerful left foot. He is comfortable playing as a central striker but can also operate deeper, linking play and attacking space. Those qualities have attracted interest beyond Turkey, with clubs such as AS Roma and Eintracht Frankfurt also monitoring his progress.
His move to Al-Ittihad was seen as a bold step, arriving as part of the club’s long-term attacking plan following the era of Karim Benzema. However, the early signs suggest that adaptation has not been straightforward.
With his market value currently estimated at around €12 million, the coming months could prove decisive.
