'Get rid' - Andy Burnham hits out at VAR after West Ham vs Everton controversy

Andy Burnham has hit out at VAR after Everton‘s 2-1 loss to West Ham on Saturday.

Goals from Tomas Soucek and Callum Wilson undid David Moyes’ side despite Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s equaliser.

However, there was significant controversy surrounding the game at the London Stadium as the Blues felt several decisions went against them.

David Moyes was particularly incensed at the decision not to award a penalty when the ball hit Mateus Fernandes’ hand as he battled with Thierno Barry.

Now, the Mayor of Greater Manchester and Everton fan Andy Burnham has shared his thoughts on the matter.

What did Burnham say about West Ham vs Everton incident?

Burnham is known for speaking out on issues involving Everton, he was very vocal about the Wolves game earlier this season when Michael Keane was sent off for a hair pull.

Now, after the incident on 25 April, he has used his platform to criticise VAR and share his grievances with the technology.

Taking to X, he said: “VAR is serving no useful purpose. It kills spontaneity in the ground and doesn’t get decisions right. Get rid.”

Why Everton pleas will fall on deaf ears

Everton are used to having dismal decisions go against them this season.

They were awarded two dodgy penalties against them in the first two games of the season against Leeds United and Brighton, before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was banned for picking up five yellow cards, one for a quick free-kick against Liverpool.

That led to Moyes having a meeting with the PGMOL, to vent his frustrations and try to enact change, but it did not seem to have any effect as marginal calls still go against the Toffees.

Keane was sent off for the hair pull in January, but the same consistency has not been applied to similar incidents since.

Another prominent incident was Bournemouth’s winner in February, when Enes Unal attempted to play the ball from an offside position, but the goal was given anyway.

Burnham can complain all he wants, but Moyes and his side are used to not getting the calls from officials, and will not expect anything to change anytime soon.

They will continue to anticipate getting minimal help from the referee and his assistants going forward, because that is what they are used to, the pleas for change will likely fall on deaf ears.
