How Sheffield United can relegate Sheffield Wednesday at Bramall Lane in just over two weeks

Sheffield Wednesday have had little to shout about all season as they continue to struggle in the Championship.

To date, the Owls have only won once in the Championship this season, coming in a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth at Fratton Park in late September.

Since then, they have gone 24 matches in the second tier without a win, as they remain rooted at the bottom of the division with minus seven points.

As a result, relegation for Sheffield Wednesday looks certain, with the Owls currently 39 points from safety.

Now, with confirmation of their drop back into League One looming, they could be sent down to the third tier by their bitter rivals, Sheffield United, when the two sides clash on 22 February.

Sheffield United have a very real chance of relegating Sheffield Wednesday

The Owls now look certain to have their relegation confirmed in the coming days.

However, for many of the Hillsborough faithful, it may be a lot closer than many of them think.

According to journalist Joe Crann, via X on 4 February, if the Owls lose their next two matches, and Blackburn Rovers pick up just a single point in their next two fixtures, Sheffield United could mathematically relegate Wednesday at Bramall Lane with a victory.

This is no doubt a worst-case scenario for Henrik Pedersen, who is already under pressure at Sheffield Wednesday, with the manager and the fans likely to be humiliated once again.

Sheffield Wednesday’s record vs Sheffield United explained

Unfortunately, the Owls do not have a good record in the Steel Derby in recent years to fall back on.

The Owls have not won a match against Sheffield United since 2012, with the Blades unbeaten in their last seven meetings.

The reverse fixture this campaign saw Sheffield United win 3-0 at Hillsborough, which was another terrible result for Pedersen’s side this campaign.

As a result, if it does come down to the game against the Blades, recent history does not give the Owls any hope of avoiding a defeat at Bramall Lane.

Therefore, Pedersen and the Sheffield Wednesday fanbase may have to rely on picking up a point against either Swansea City or Millwall to avoid this fate in the coming weeks.
