Jamie Redknapp makes huge Arsenal points prediction and declares title race over

Jamie Redknapp has backed Arsenal to win the Premier League by at least eight points after a weekend of results that he feels has ended the title race.

The Gunners hammered Leeds United 4-0 on Saturday and then could relax as their title rivals were in action on Sunday.

Aston Villa hosted Brentford and Manchester City went to Tottenham and both faltered as they tried to keep pace with the leaders.

The Villains were stunned as they lost 1-0 to the 10-man Bees, while City drew 2-2 with Spurs in a bizarre game in north London.

Pep Guardiola’s side took a two-goal lead in the first half as a near-silent stadium watched on and Tottenham produced a limp performance.

Things completely changed at the break, though, with Dominic Solanke scoring twice to rescue a point and help out their local rivals at the top of the division.

Redknapp feels Sunday’s results were enough to end the title challenges of both City and Villa, and now reckons Arsenal will go on to a dominant title win, from their current lead of six points.

‘I think this will be remembered as the weekend Arsenal won the title. I think it’s that big a weekend for them,’ the former England midfielder said on Sky Sports.

‘It was a huge result against Leeds. Mikel Arteta will have been at home this afternoon watching the two games and thinking, “I fancy Villa to beat Brentford.” They didn’t. “Then the second half, thinking 2-0, this could be 5-0.”

‘He will be opening a nice bottle of Rioja tonight, because this is it, this is the title done for Arsenal.

‘And I think they could go on to win it by 8 or 10 points. I’d be amazed if they don’t.’

Redknapp feels Arsenal have been making their own problems of late, but now should be able to relax with their rivals stumbling.

‘They’ve been getting in their own way lately, getting a bit anxious, the manager gets a little bit up tight and I think that transmits to the players,’ he said.

‘I think now they can start to relax a bit and I’d be amazed if they don’t go on and win this title comfortably now. They’ve got the best squad and the best players and nobody is really strong enough to compete.

‘Villa are doing incredible things, but they’re running out of steam and Manchester City’s form just isn’t strong enough.’

There are still 14 games to go and Arsenal are six points clear at the top of the table, so there is more than enough time for things to change, but momentum is back with Mikel Arteta’s side after a recent wobble.

After the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea on Tuesday, the Gunners are back in Premier League action at home to Sunderland on Saturday.
