Joe Cole has named the Premier League defender who would be a ‘brilliant addition’ for Chelsea.

Chelsea’s season is threatening to implode with the Blues exiting the Champions League and slipping down the Premier League table.

Liam Rosenior enjoyed a bright start to his reign at Stamford Bridge but the wheels have started to fall off since the start of February.

Chelsea were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by eventual runners-up Arsenal before dropping points against relegation-battlers Burnley and Leeds United.

Rosenior’s side suffered an embarrassing 8-2 aggregate defeat to PSG in the first knockout round of the Champions League and have also lost their last two Premier League games against Newcastle United and Everton.

That disappointing run of form has seen Chelsea slip to sixth in the table, six points outside the top-four places with seven games remaining.

A significant section of Chelsea fans have already turned on Rosenior and it remains to be seen whether he is still in the Stamford Bridge hot-seat come the summer.

Whoever is in charge will be keen to bolster a squad that looks short in key areas despite Chelsea’s sensational spending in recent years.

A new goalkeeper will likely arrive following Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen’s struggles and Chelsea may also look to sign a new centre-back.

Asked about possible transfer targets for his former club Chelsea, Cole said: ‘Micky van de Ven from Tottenham.

‘I think he’s looking like he wants to leave and I think he would be a brilliant addition for Chelsea.

‘They want to play that high line and you need a defender with pace and, you know, a good one-on-one defender. He’s brilliant.’

Van de Ven has been linked with a move away from Tottenham with the north London side in a huge battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

The 24-year-old Netherlands international has established himself as one of the most highly-rated defenders in the Premier League despite Spurs’ struggles over the past two seasons.

A demoralising 3-0 defeat to fellow relegation-battlers Nottingham Forest on Sunday leaves Tottenham just one place and one point above the drop zone with seven games remaining.

Liverpool have also been linked with Van de Ven as they look to bolster their defensive options after missing out on new Manchester City signing Marc Guehi.
