Johan Lange: Tottenham chief set to pay the price for club’s failings, his position is under ‘significant threat’

Johan Lange could soon find himself out of a job at Tottenham Hotspur as a result of their dismal 2025-26 campaign.

That is according to journalist Ben Jacobs via the Last Word on Spurs podcast, who has suggested that his position in North London is under “significant threat” as the club continue to fight for their lives at the foot of the Premier League table.

The Danish sporting director has been in place within the Lilywhites’ hierarchy since November 2023 and has taken a controlling lead in the club’s recruitment drive since his arrival.

However, that could soon be set to come to an end, with Jacobs indicating that the 46-year-old’s position is set to come in for major scrutiny regardless of whether the team are relegated at the end of the season.

Tottenham’s hierarchy have received almost as much scrutiny as the players on the pitch in recent months, with fans growing increasingly unhappy with the way the club has been run.

Johan Lange risking everything on Roberto De Zerbi appointment

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Lange was one of the key decision-makers at Tottenham behind the recent appointment of Roberto De Zerbi.

That move was met with a mixed reaction from the supporters, who have grown increasingly frustrated with their club with every passing week of late.

The appointment of Thomas Frank last summer didn’t go to plan by any means, and it set the Lilywhites on course for the challenging situation that they now find themselves in.

Lange’s work has come in for criticism throughout the campaign, with many errors in terms of recruitment being highlighted as the season has worn on.

The De Zerbi appointment will need to have an immediate impact if Tottenham are to turn their form around and secure their Premier League status, but that is perhaps the only thing that could potentially save Lange, judging by the reports.

He is risking everything on the De Zerbi appointment, but he could find that he pays the price for the club’s woeful season in the summer, regardless of how successful a move it proves to be.

Who could replace Lange at Tottenham?

Former Everton and Aston Villa chief executive Keith Wyness told Football Insider back in March that Dougie Freedman and Thiago Pinto are the main candidates to replace Lange at Tottenham.

The sporting director’s position has appeared precarious for some time now, and Wyness suggested that he has heard talk of both candidates being under consideration.

Pinto has been President of Football Operations at Bournemouth since May 2024 and has helped them to continue to establish themselves in the Premier League.

Freedman is currently working in the sporting director role at Saudi club Al-Diriyah, having previously overseen the appointment of Oliver Glasner during his time in the hierarchy at Crystal Palace.

It remains to be seen who Tottenham would try to move for if Lange is sacked, but it is already clear that the writing could be on the wall for their current man.
