Keane drops brutal reality check on Carrick’s chances to become permanent Man United boss
Interim boss Michael Carrick stepped in, steadied the ship, and actually got a tune out of the squad down the stretch.
Because of that, a lot of players and ex-teammates are fully backing him for the permanent gig.
But if you thought Roy Keane was going to get caught up in the good vibes and sentimentality, think again.
Never one to mince his words, the legendary United captain just served up a classic, ruthless reality
check about what it actually takes to win the Premier League.
Roy Keane has doubts over Michael Carrick
Keane painted a pretty vivid picture to explain the massive gap between United and the teams actually hoarding the trophies right now.
On the latest episode of The Overlap, he said:
“If you are Pep Guardiola or Mikel Arteta and you are on holiday, sitting on their yachts, and they see Michael Carrick getting announced as Manchester United manager, do you think they will become fearful of him?”
Keane is basically saying that to mix it with the big boys, you need a manager with a serious pedigree.
You need someone who makes the opposition sweat before a ball is even kicked. Carrick is undeniably a brilliant football mind and a respected guy, but does he strike fear into the hearts of Manchester City and Arsenal? Keane clearly doesn’t think so.
He took direct aim at the actual timeline of a potential Old Trafford rebuild under Carrick, adding:
“I am not going to sit there and say that Michael Carrick is going to get Manchester United back in the top in the next 2/3 years. I don’t see it. But I’d love to be proven wrong.”
It’s a fascinating clash of opinions. Inside the Old Trafford dressing room, Carrick is incredibly popular.
He took over during a total mess, calmed everyone down, and got the team playing cohesive football again.
Keane wants Man United to show more ambition
But Keane’s argument goes way past team chemistry. The modern Premier League is an absolute tactical arms race. Keane is essentially challenging the INEOS board to think bigger.
This whole debate perfectly sums up the massive headache Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the board are dealing with this summer.
Do you reward the guy who fixed the immediate mess and keep the dressing room happy? Or do you go out and find a certified heavyweight who might actually make Pep and Arteta nervous?
While Carrick has done a brilliant job at the club, Keane’s reservations are fair and they make complete sense.
