Keith Wyness: TFG have ‘serious legal advice’ to help Everton in potential time of need

Everton are currently facing the issue of potentially qualifying for the same European competition as Roma next season.

The Friedkin Group owns both clubs, with the Americans set to have a possible issue should both qualify for the UEFA Conference League, as an example.

It was the same this season, as Crystal Palace were forced to drop into the Conference League from the Europa, after it was determined that John Textor had control or influence at Selhurst Park and Lyon.

UEFA gave clubs until March 1 last month to comply for next season, but it has yet to be revealed if the Friedkins took steps to do that and avoid possible future issues.

Friedkins likely seek legal aid over Everton controversy

Keith Wyness insists that the Friedkins likely took serious legal advice before making a final decision.

Speaking exclusively to Goodison News, the former Everton CEO admitted that details could have been kept confidential, regardless of the published deadline.

“Well, yes and no,” Wyness started. “It had to be registered with them by March 1st, so that was the date that the solution had to be given.

“Now obviously those sorts of things are confidential and quite rightly, and they’ve chosen to keep it that way rather than actually announce what the structure is that they’ve planned.

“So we can’t really comment on how, you know, whether it’s going to work or not.

“You’d have to presume that it will work because the Friedkins are a serious group of people, serious legal advice, etc., got to believe that if they’re saying that there is a structural solution, that will be correct.

“It must revolve around giving up control of the decision-making capabilities, particularly on the football side, if they happen to be in the same competition as Roma.”

Friedkin Group deserves trust after Everton start

Wyness admits that there is an element of blind trust needed at the Hill Dickinson, but a problem would emerge if Everton had to drop down a level of competition.

“But you know, something I don’t know whether it’s going to be effective,” he continued. “We just don’t know.

“So we have to hope that we’re trusting them to do this. You know there would be dissatisfaction, certainly if Everton did qualify for Europe and were not able to play in, say, the Europa League and had to go down to the Conference League or if they were in the Conference League, they had to drop out of Europe completely.

“That would be a problem.

“But still, we have to have faith, and we’ll take them at their word, and we’ll curiously wait to see if they’ve found a way around the blind trust situation, which has been the preferred option so far.”

David Moyes has Everton flying in the Premier League, so everything must be sorted beforehand to make sure that nothing is taken away from them down the line, if they continue that form.

Only time will tell what happens next.
