'They have that right' - Stefan Borson reacts to latest London Stadium drama at West Ham

West Ham United have enough problems without being forced to leave the London Stadium for the 2029 World Athletics Championships.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider he believes the Hammers have the right to remain in the 62,500-capacity facility.

London is hoping to stage the world championships at the former Olympic Stadium in September 2029.

However, the Premier League club are refusing to vacate the stadium for around three weeks, insisting football matches take priority during the season.

West Ham have played their home games at the London Stadium since making the controversial move across east London from Upton Park in 2016.

Why West Ham ‘have the right’ to refuse stadium request

London is facing competition from Rome, Munich and Nairobi to host the world championships.

The event previously took place at the London Stadium in July 2017, avoiding a clash with the football season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed West Ham’s right to refuse to leave the stadium.

“I’m sure it’s all in the tenancy agreement, and they’re doing broadly what they’re allowed to do,” said Borson.

“If they weren’t, then the rules would be put in place and they would be forced to allow the events to occur. It doesn’t surprise me that they’ve said no. I’m sure they have that right.

“It’s absolutely as expected that they would say no. Why would they allow that disruption to their league season? They’ve got enough problems. They don’t need that.

“The focus is just staying in the Premier League right now. But it’s just not a surprise that they’re not prepared to allow that to happen.”

How West Ham are involved in separate London Stadium battle

West Ham are facing a separate battle involving the stadium following a dispute with their landlords.

As part of the Hammers’ rental agreement with the London Stadium, an “anti-embarrassment clause” was included requiring the club to pay their landlords a share of any profit they received from the sale of shares.

Daniel Kretinksy’s purchase of a 27 per cent stake in 2021 saw the clause become active, with the club paying £2.6million as a result.

The Irons challenged the claim an additional £3.6m was owed, but the London Stadium was successful after an expert determination.

Although West Ham successfully overturned the expert determination at the High Court, the Court of Appeal has found in the London Stadium’s favour.

The Athletic reported the club are now considering launching an appeal to the Supreme Court after being ordered to pay the extra £3.6m.

Meanwhile, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are currently facing issues on the pitch as they sit third bottom in the Premier League table.
