Man United dealt major transfer blow as 'huge' deadline day deal agreed

Man United have suffered a blow to their transfer plans as long-term target Dayot Upamecano has agreed to extend his Bayern Munich contract.

United are among a number of clubs who were interested in the centre-back as he looked set to become available on a free transfer, but have now been informed of his decision.

Meanwhile, Football Insider revealed in November that both Chelsea and Liverpool were keeping tabs on Upamecano, although the latter have agreed to sign Jeremy Jacquet.

Man United have been eyeing potential defensive reinforcements amid concerns about Harry Maguire‘s future, while they believed they can strengthen in the position.

However, they will now be forced to assess other targets after the France international opted to snub their interest in favour of remaining in Munich.

United’s interest in Upamecano had come amid long-term concerns around their defensive stability, with major reinforcements being targeted in that area.

Maguire and Lisandro Martinez have now become the first-choice pairing under Michael Carrick, but the lack of quality strength in depth remains a concern for many.

Upamecano has been free to discuss terms over a pre-contract deal since the start of January, but plans were being put in place for the end of the season instead.

The Bayern Munich defender’s potential availability had alerted multiple clubs to the opportunity, but a late twist on deadline day has changed those plans.

Harry Maguire contract update emerges at Man United

Former United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider on 20 January that Man United should extend Maguire’s contract, but there are doubts about whether they will make the move.

With just six months remaining on his current contract, the England international could be available for free in June, placing a number of clubs on alert.

His return to the starting XI under Carrick has been widely praised, but his exit has not been ruled out with a new boss set to arrive in the summer.

This comes as Brown told Football Insider on 22 January that Everton are interested in signing Maguire, with Moyes believed to be a big fan of the centre-back.

The defender will have no shortage of suitors should he leave Man United this summer, but the opportunity to continue playing Premier League football will be appealing.
