Manchester United are reportedly yet to hold talks with Casemiro to try to convince the veteran midfielder to change his mind and stay beyond the summer.

Casemiro made an official announcement back in late January that this would be his fourth and final season at Old Trafford.

The 34-year-old midfielder joined United from Real Madrid in a deal worth around £70million in 2022 and has gone on to make 154 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Given the fanfare surrounding his arrival in the Premier League, it’s fair to say Casemiro has – at times – fallen short of expectations, not helped by United’s struggles as a whole under Erik ten Hag and subsequently Ruben Amorim.

But since Michael Carrick took over the reins from Amorim, Casemiro is playing some of his best football yet in a United shirt and calls for the Brazilian to make a U-turn on his decision are growing louder with every passing game.

Casemiro opened the scoring in United’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa with his seventh goal of the Premier League campaign, a brilliant header which the five-time Champions League winner has become known for across his illustrious career.

Loud cries of ‘one more year!’ were heard in the stands as Casemiro did a lap of the pitch shortly after the final whistle, with the Brazil international pictured tapping the United crest on his shirt.

However, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, there has been no movement as yet regarding Casemiro’s future and – as it stands – United’s trip to Brighton in May will be his farewell match.

Casemiro already decided to move on,’ Romano explained on his YouTube channel.

At the moment, what I can tell you is that no one from the club has told Casemiro, “Please stay with us for one more season”.

‘Let’s see what’s going to happen from now until the end of the season.

‘Maybe this situation [a potential U-turn] can happen at the very end of the season when you are maybe sure about the project you’re going to do in terms of manager, in terms of Champions League football and all the rest.

‘But at the moment, still nothing changes between Casemiro and United, apart from the fact that Casemiro has been a fantastic professional, he’s helping and his relationship with the fans is great so let’s see what’s going to happen.’

Carrick was wary of adding any fuel to speculation of a possible U-turn when asked about Casemiro’s situation at his post-match press conference on Sunday.

The United interim boss did, though, applaud the three-time La Liga winner on the ‘terrific’ impact he had made during his extraordinary two months in the job.

Asked if there was any chance Casemiro could be convinced to change his mind, Carrick replied: ‘I think, in some ways, it’s difficult to say.

‘When something is decided, in some ways, the fact that it’s decided makes things a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation really.

‘I think the impact he’s had has been terrific, certainly since I’ve been here and working with him, and his influence in the team and big moments in goals.

‘And I think it was a nice moment at the end there with the supporters, and having that connection and the respect.

‘That was a nice moment and I think he’ll enjoy that.’
