Marco Reus says Jadon Sancho should strongly consider rejoining Borussia Dortmund if he believes it is a place where he ‘feels comfortable’ and can ‘rediscover his game’.

Sancho made the bold move to leave Manchester City’s academy for Dortmund as a 17-year-old and the precocious teenager seemingly had the world at his feet after breaking into the first-team midway through the 2017/18 campaign.

He would go on to rack up 50 goals and 64 assists across three outstanding seasons with BVB, helping the club win the German Cup and the German Super Cup.

It was these extraordinary numbers that earned Sancho a £73million move to Manchester United in 2021, with the England international heralded as Old Trafford’s next global superstar.

However, Sancho fell some way short of expectations across two underwhelming opening seasons at the Theatre of Dreams and returned to Dortmund on loan in January 2024.

Seemingly out of chances at United, the attacker went on to complete temporary moves to Chelsea and, now, Aston Villa, where he has managed just one goal and three assists in 31 appearances.

Despite his meagre return, there have been some reports this week that Villa are preparing a move to sign Sancho on a free transfer in the summer window.

But speaking to Bild, Reus encouraged his former Dortmund team-mate to think about a third spell at the Westfalenstadion when his United contract expires in June.

‘My primary advice to Jadon is to look for a place where he feels comfortable again and can rediscover his game,’ the ex-BVB and Germany forward said.

‘And if that’s at Dortmund, then it would be good for both him and Dortmund.’

Reus has fond memories of his time with Sancho both on and off the pitch, highlighting the 26-year-old’s ability and game intelligence.

‘I have rarely played with a player who instinctively made such good decisions in tight situations,’ Reus, who now turns out for MLS outfit LA Galaxy, added.

‘Aside from his assists and goals, he knows what the game needs and what his team-mates need.

‘He’s a player who can draw two or three opponents towards him and can accurately assess when to involve his team-mates at the right moments.’

According to Bild, Sancho would have to significantly lower his salary expectations were he to join Dortmund this summer.

The England forward currently earns around €15m-a-year (£13m) but BVB would only be prepared to offer him a deal worth in the region of €5 million plus bonuses.
