Merlin Rohl finds new value for Everton as David Moyes unlocks star vs Man City

Merlin Rohl worked tirelessly for Everton as they played out a chaotic 3-3 draw with Manchester City on Monday night.

The German played 89 minutes for David Moyes’ men, as they produced a stunning second-half comeback, before ultimately seeing three points slip away from them in the dying embers.

Jeremy Doku set the visitors on their way just before half-time, before the game turned with Thierno Barry’s double and Jake O’Brien’s header.

However, City showed their title-winning credentials yet again as they mounted a comeback of their own late on, with Erling Haaland cutting the lead in half, before Doku curled home a beauty to level in the 97th minute.

Everton earned a hard-fought point against City with a makeshift XI, as Moyes finally gave Rohl the opportunity to impress.

Merlin Rohl may have just re-invented himself at Everton

Rohl has had to bide his time since moving to Everton from Freiburg on loan last summer, as he has started just three Premier League games all season.

However, he seized his rare opportunity to start with both hands against Manchester City, as he worked tirelessly from start to finish against Pep Guardiola’s men.

The 23-year-old is a holding midfielder by trade, but Moyes used him as an auxiliary winger on the right flank, and his ploy worked a treat throughout the game.

Rohl provided extra solidity for his team in the wide areas, as he continually broke up the play and plugged gaps by tucking inside.

He even had enough energy to race forward and set up Barry for the third goal, as he burst into space down the flank before squaring for his striker.

It was not a role that many would have associated with the youngster, but he may now have re-invented himself as a defensive winger after his latest display.

Everton may have been regretting the fact that his move from Freiburg has just become permanent, but those concerns will surely have been alleviated now.

Rohl may have just saved his future

Rohl has been tipped to leave Everton this summer, such is the lack of impact that he has made on Merseyside since his arrival.

Those suggestions will surely now fall silent after the midfielder proved his worth on Monday night, as he showcased his value to the team in a hugely difficult game.

Moyes loves players who are capable of being a reliable option in multiple positions, and Rohl proved that he can fall into that category.

The way that he played in an unfamiliar role could now see him in line for more minutes between now and the end of the season, and it could even save his future at the club.
