Michael Stewart details ‘major concern’ over Tuur Rommens after Rangers absence

Michael Stewart has said that Rangers need Tuur Rommens back fit as soon as possible after spotting a clear weakness in their defence during their match against Dundee United while he was sidelined.

Rommens was missing from Rangers’ starting eleven for their 4-2 win over Dundee United on Saturday with a mysterious injury.

Jayden Meghoma started at left-back in his absence, but struggled to contain the visitors’ right-flank pairing of Luca Stephenson and Neil Farrugia.

Rommens has been a revelation for the Gers since his January move from Westerlo, with fans sent into a frenzy when their team for the match was revealed without him in it.

Rangers could do without any long-term injuries to key men as they chase a Premiership triumph, with Stewart concerned for Danny Rohl’s side if the Belgian defender continues to miss more matches.

Rommens has quickly become a fan favourite at Ibrox for his relentless work down the left flank, with the reported £3million fee paid to Westerlo already seeming like a bargain after just eight appearances.

He has scored and assisted one goal each so far, while creating 16 chances too, and the Gers are yet to lose a league game in which he has played.

The 23-year-old has already been linked away from Ibrox ahead of the summer, but sources have told Football Insider that Rangers are confident of keeping Rommens amid potential interest.

He has replaced Meghoma as Rohl’s main left-back since coming in, but the Brentford loanee was handed a start against Dundee United and may well be needed for the coming games too.

Speaking live on Premier Sports’ Scottish Football Social Club on Monday, Stewart insinuated that any prolonged absence for Rommens could seriously hamper Rangers’ title hopes after what he saw on Saturday.

He said: “If Tuur Rommens ends up being out for more than just another week or so, that’d be a major concern.

“That left side of the defence with (Nasser) Djiga and (Jayden) Meghoma as it was on Saturday, that’s where Dundee United, invariably, were causing Rangers problems and getting opportunities.”

What has Rohl said about Rommens’ injury concerns?

Rohl will be fully aware of what Rommens brings to his side, but an imminent return is not expected after what he revealed following Saturday’s game.

Elaborating further on the injury, he said: “During training on Thursday, he felt something in his quad. We scanned him, it’s not a big one but still serious enough.

“Hopefully it’s just two more games and he’ll be ready for the second game during the split. The good thing is we have one extra week between Falkirk and the first post-split game. He will do everything to be ready as soon as possible.”

The German boss will have to stick with his alternative option in Meghoma for now, but will hope that it doesn’t cost him or the club in the six huge matches that they have left to win the title.
