Morgan Gibbs-White: How Vitor Pereira replaces Nottingham Forest star as injury update arrives after Chelsea knock

Morgan Gibbs-White is facing a race against time to feature in the second leg of Nottingham Forest’s Europa League semi-final against Aston Villa on Thursday.

The midfielder was forced off injured with a head injury as Vitor Pereira’s side beat Chelsea 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Monday, after he collided with Robert Sanchez.

The Nottingham Forest captain had just assisted Taiwo Awoniyi’s second goal, and walked off the pitch with his head bandaged.

The incident was one of two frightening clashes throughout the game, with Zach Abbott and Jesse Derry involved in an earlier collision, which left the latter needing to be taken to the hospital. It has since been confirmed that he is conscious and responsive.

Pereira has confirmed that Gibbs-White is facing a race to be ready to play on Thursday, with much of Nottingham Forest’s strong form coming down to him.

Vitor Pereira provides Morgan Gibbs-White update

Football Insider exclusively revealed last month that Gibbs-White is increasingly likely to stay at Nottingham Forest this summer in a massive boost.

The 26-year-old has enjoyed a stunning season, performing especially well under the management of Pereira.

In just the last three Premier League games, Gibbs-White has scored four times and assisted twice, adding to 12 total direct Premier League goal contributions in 2026.

And it has been a similar story in Europe, with the midfielder scoring against FC Porto last month to send Nottingham Forest into the Europa League semi-final.

His absence will be felt massively if he cannot play a part away at Villa on Thursday, and Pereira will be waiting nervously.

Speaking after his captain had been forced off on Monday, he said: “I’m waiting. Gibbs-White has a deep cut but he is a fighter and has a strong mentality.

“I hope our medical department can do magic to put him in condition [to play]. We will see. I said to him: ‘You don’t need to head the ball just to play’. We will see.

“He is speaking normally, he remembers everything. The only thing is the pain – we will see.”

How can Pereira replace Gibbs-White?

Gibbs-White’s absence will be a worst-case scenario for Nottingham Forest on Thursday, and they will have to get smart to replace him.

Luckily, Monday’s game also saw the re-emergence of Taiwo Awoniyi, who scored twice and won a penalty for the visitors.

The striker played ahead of Igor Jesus, who performed well as a second striker, and the pair could even be thrown into a front three with Chris Wood.

Pereira will not want to get too radical, however, and could even turn to James McAtee or Omari Hutchinson in a more central position.

The latter has been in superb form of late and would be missed on the wing, but Dilane Bakwa’s strong performance against Chelsea will not have gone unnoticed.

Nottingham Forest will hope that Gibbs-White will be ready to play on Thursday, but his potential absence will be a true test of Pereira’s adaptability.
