Newcastle fans slam ‘Championship’ player despite dominant win vs PSV: ‘He’s absolutely horrific’
Newcastle United took a step closer to securing a top-eight Champions League finish on Wednesday with an easy 3-0 win over PSV.
It was a wonderful performance from Eddie Howe’s side, with Yoane Wissa the clear standout at St James’ Park.
The striker got the opener, before Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes added to Newcastle’s lead to make it a comfortable win.
However, despite his goal, supporters remained less than impressed with Gordon, who has had a tough season of late.
Newcastle fans roast Anthony Gordon despite win over PSV
Gordon had done little to please Newcastle fans this season despite scoring numerous times in the Champions League.
The winger has consistently been slammed for his lack of goal contributions in the Premier League, especially when the Magpies were out of form in late 2025.
Nevertheless, Howe has consistently stuck by Gordon, and the winger was once again awarded a start against PSV.

Here, he netted the Magpies’ second as Wissa put the ball on a plate for the England international.
However, apart from his goal, many of the St James’ Park felt he did little and were quick to take to X to criticise how the 24-year-old played in the victory.
Gordon is a championship player. It was a ridiculous decision selling Miguel Almiron— HOWE OUT (@BrianPinas9) January 21, 2026
Harvey Barnes is our best winger. Gets goals. Clinical and precise on the ball when it counts.
Gordon showed a few minutes prior he’s not good enough in key positions. That’s the big difference between them.#nufc #NUFC #NEWPSV #championsleague— SC NUFC (@shane74918881) January 21, 2026
Barnes over Gordon for the next few games minimum #nufc— Craig (@CraigG_NUFC) January 21, 2026
Anthony Gordon is absolutely horrific.
Unless it’s a tap in or a penalty.#NUFC— CTApps (@CharXThoughts) January 21, 2026
Others also believed that the winger was selfish and could have helped add to their lead if he had not continuously gone for glory.
Gordon needs to square it there. That’s really poor.#nufc— SC NUFC (@shane74918881) January 21, 2026
Why did Gordon not pass to Wissa, it was then an open goal #nufc— Garry (@Garrysnaith61) January 21, 2026
Interesting. Bit shocked VAR didn’t look at that. You can’t push someone when they’re in the air going for a header 😂😂 maybe soft but VAR should have checked anyway.
And why didn’t Gordon play the pass when we were 3 on 2 🤦🏼♂️ small margins i suppose #NUFC— Adrian (Adi) Langley (@adilangley) January 21, 2026
How bad was Gordon against PSV?
According to Fotmob on 21 January, Gordon had a solid game against PSV.
On top of his goal, he had three shots, completed 70 per cent of his passes, had an xG of 1.01 and made five recoveries.
However, there were also some worrying stats, with Gordon failing to create a single chance, on top of only winning two of a possible six ground duels.
Anthony Gordon’s stats vs PSV Minutes 72 Goals 1 Shots 3 Passing completion 70% xG 1.01 Recoveries 5 Chances created 0 Ground duels won 33%
As a result, Gordon will have to be better going forward if the Magpies want to go far in the Champions League.
A consistent attacking outlet will be required, and if he cannot provide this, Howe will surely drop him from the lineup.
Nevertheless, there is every chance that his goal against PSV can help bring his confidence and lead to better performances going forward from the England international into the second half of 2025-26 campaign.
