Newcastle United next manager: Oliver Glasner odds tumble to replace Eddie Howe

Newcastle United‘s managerial situation has taken another twist as Oliver Glasner’s odds are shortened to be their successor to Eddie Howe.

Glasner is set to leave his post as Crystal Palace boss at the end of this season after deciding against renewing his contract.

Howe is under pressure as Newcastle struggle in the Premier League, but he is set to be given a chance to turn their form around due to the credit he has built with their owners.

Several names are being touted to replace him, regardless of the board’s stance, with Jose Mourinho and Andoni Iraola both closely linked.

It remains to be seen who becomes Newcastle’s next manager, and if they are even appointed soon, with Glasner now seeming more likely to take the job after a new market update.

Oliver Glasner is 12/1 to be Newcastle’s next manager after Eddie Howe

Newcastle’s 2-1 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday has left them lingering in 14th place as it stands, with a European qualification spot rapidly slipping away from their grasp.

Palace drew 0-0 with West Ham to remain 13th on Monday, and their full focus is set to be on winning the Conference League between now and the end of the season.

Winning another trophy would certainly be the ideal way for Glasner to bow out at Selhurst Park, and it may even thrust him further onto the Magpies’ radar if they continue to struggle over the next month.

The Austrian has been linked to several jobs in the months since announcing his impending Palace exit, and one of the biggest UK bookmakers has now shortened his odds to be the next Newcastle boss to 12/1 from 14/1.

He remains the third-favourite in the betting, with Bournemouth’s Iraola in pole position at odds of 4/1 and Mourinho coming in next at 9/2.

What has Howe said about his future at Newcastle?

Sources have told Football Insider that Howe’s job remains safe as it stands, but Newcastle CEO David Hopkinson recently refused to give assurances that he would still be at the club at the start of next season.

He was asked about his future at the club beyond this season ahead of the Magpies’ clash against his old employers, Bournemouth, and provided a bullish response in the face of recent doubts.

Howe said: “I just want to serve the club and do what’s right for the football club. That’s always been my aim.

“If that’s me leaving to help the club, then of course that’s something I’ll do, I’ve got no issue doing that.

“In terms of my fire, my fire is burning very, very strongly. There’s no guarantee from my side what’s going to happen in the future, because as I’ve said, the forces that move in football clubs move quickly.

“But my fire is there. There’s loads of wood stacked up and I’m ready to put it on it.”
