Bundesliga: Hamburg take crucial step in addressing Philip Otele’s red card against Bremen

Six-time Bundesliga Champions Hamburger SV have taken a bold step to address the red card incurred by Super Eagles winger Philip Otele in their weekend loss to Werder Bremen, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old was given his marching orders in the 79th minute by Referee Florian Exner without any prior warning, 13 minutes after he'd only just come on.

This happened after Otele stomped Werder Bremen's Cameron Puertas on the ankle with his studs. Exner went to the VAR screen and immediately dipped his hands into his pockets to issue a straight red card.

After the game, Hamburg's coach, Merlin Polzin, aired his displeasure about the referee's officiating, dwelling particularly on his poor communication skills, largely because a Werder Bremen player initially attempted a foul like that, but Exner waved for play to continue.

Retired DFB referee, Manuel Gräfe also weighed in on the incident. The German agrees that the red card was unavoidable, before opining that a huge game like the Nurd-derby might have come too early for a young referee who only just debuted in the Bundesliga this season.

“Bremen were very lucky with their foul. The HSV player gets the ball and the Bremen player clearly catches him. There should have been an intervention,” the 52-year-old told BILD.

“In Otele's case, the Werder player clearly gets to the ball first. You cannot come down with your studs upright on the opponent’s legs. The use of video review and the subsequent red card were therefore unavoidable.

“I think the northern derby came too early for the still relatively inexperienced referee. Unfortunately, he increasingly lost control, and Hamburg are right to be frustrated,” Grafe concluded.

Hamburg to appeal Philip Otele's red card

According to Liga Insider, the club have appealed to the DFB Sports Court for the potential two-match ban to be overturned.

Club officials are optimistic that a fresh hearing could yield a more lenient outcome, particularly given the context of the challenge and the player’s on-field intent. A revised ruling is expected in the coming days.

The timing of the appeal could prove significant. Hamburg are on a tight run of fixtures as they battle to remain clear of the Bundesliga’s relegation and play-off positions.

The incident at Bremen was not isolated; it highlighted Hamburg’s broader disciplinary struggles this season. The Dinosaurs are leading the league in dismissals (8).

For Otele, overturning or reducing the ban would preserve his availability during key fixtures where Hamburg need attacking firepower to get them over the line.
