Rangers' new hire told to match Brighton to avert new 'crisis' - ex-CEO

Rangers must become more like Premier League club Brighton and begin planning for future scenarios in advance.

That is according to ex-Aberdeen, Aston Villa, and Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, after new chief executive Jim Gillespie started work at Ibrox.

The Gers sacked former chief executive Patrick Stewart last December, and Gillespie joins the Glasgow club from St Mirren to take up the role.

Gillespie will work on strengthening Rangers’ finances, improving the club’s relationship with the fanbase, and supporting manager Danny Rohl in the transfer market.

Rangers want to continue raising revenue under the ownership of 49ers Enterprises, which would be boosted if Rohl can lead his side to the Scottish Premiership title and European football this season.

Rangers chief must ‘look at Brighton very carefully’

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness – who served as CEO at Pittodrie between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – believes Rangers are currently “stumbling from one crisis to another.”

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast, Wyness thinks that Brighton should be the club that Gillespie should look to learn from in his role.

He told Football Insider‘s Inside Track podcast: “He’s got to look at Brighton very carefully and look at succession planning.

“Rangers have stumbled from one crisis to another for many, many years now. And somebody has got to take the club by the scruff of the neck and start succession planning, not only at manager level, but at every single level of the club, both executive level, football operations level, and also, you know, even his own job.

“They’ve got to start having a succession plan and not stumbling from one crisis to another. There’s a lot on his in-tray to get going. I wish him luck.”

Rangers could miss out on signing Nasser Djiga

Sources have told Football Insider that Rangers do not want to meet Wolves’ price tag on defender Nasser Djiga at the end of the season.

Djiga is on loan at Ibrox from the Premier League club, and Rangers have the option to make the move permanent for £8million.

Rohl could explore the market for other options if Wolves stick by their £8m valuation, whilst the 23-year-old could play a greater role at Wolves in the Championship next season.
