Who is Samson Adamu? Inside Nigeria’s first-ever CAF General Secretary appointment
Nigeria’s Samson Adamu has stepped into one of the most powerful administrative roles in continental football after being named Acting General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football, Soccernet.ng reports.
The appointment, confirmed on Sunday, follows the resignation of Véron Mosengo-Omba and signals a major leadership shift at the Cairo-based organisation. It is also a landmark moment as Adamu is the first Nigerian to ever occupy the role in CAF’s more than 70-year history.
In a brief message posted on X, the Nigeria Football Federation celebrated the development, writing:
“Congratulations to our own Samson Adamu who has been appointed Acting General Secretary of CAF.”

Adamu’s rise did not come by chance. Before this move, he served as CAF’s Director of Competitions, where he played a central role in organising major tournaments across the continent. His work helped improve how competitions like the Africa Cup of Nations and CAF club tournaments are planned and delivered.
Now, he takes on a much bigger task. As Acting General Secretary, Adamu becomes the chief executive of CAF’s General Secretariat. This means he will oversee the day-to-day running of African football’s governing body, working closely with the president and executive committee.
His duties include managing operations, supervising staff, overseeing competitions, and ensuring the organisation meets governance and financial standards. He will also represent CAF in dealings with key stakeholders such as FIFA and national football associations.

Samson Adamu: A historic step and a test of leadership
Adamu’s appointment is being widely seen as a major boost for Nigeria’s influence in African football administration. While Nigerians have held important CAF roles before – including Amaju Pinnick, a former CAF vice-president – none had reached this level of executive authority.
His emergence reflects Nigeria’s growing interest in the administrative side of the game and not just on-pitch success.

The timing is also important. CAF is going through a period of transition following Mosengo-Omba’s departure. Adamu is expected to ensure stability while a permanent General Secretary is appointed at the next General Assembly.
That will not be an easy task. CAF continues to face pressure to improve transparency, governance, and the commercial growth of its competitions. The Acting General Secretary plays a key role in all of these areas, from managing finances to shaping policies that affect football across the continent.
Since its inception in 1957, the General Secretariat of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has been led by a relatively small number of administrators, many of whom served for several decades.
Nine General Secretaries have managed the secretariat, including five Egyptians and three Moroccans with Véron Mosengo-Omba (DR Congo/Switzerland roots) the first non-North African to oversee the affairs of the body.
