With uncertainty surrounding the Lilywhites, the prospect of a long-term deal has puzzled many supporters online, who have since been reacting.

Plenty of Tottenham fans believe that a mistake is being made, with one fan saying: “Genuinely cannot begin to understand the thought process behind the RDZ appointment. What about him or his career screams 5-year contract? Incompetence yet again from the chuckle brothers.”

Others continued with a similar vein of shock at the news.

Meanwhile, there are Spurs fans who believe the five-year deal for De Zerbi shows that Tottenham are making the same mistakes over and over again.

Why a five-year contract for Roberto De Zerbi makes little sense for Tottenham

Spurs fans may be right to have their concerns over offering De Zerbi a contract of that length.

Throughout his managerial career, the Italian has only ever managed a team for longer than two years on one occasion.

That came during his three-year spell with Sassuolo from 2018 to 2021.

Other than that, his tenures elsewhere at his seven other previous roles have ranged anywhere from just a couple of months to two seasons in charge.

Offering a five-year deal seems like an unnecessary risk, especially when Tottenham have now sacked three managers in less than a year.

We may return to this point in a few years and view this decision in a different light, but right now, it seems reckless.
