Sources: Rangers star happy to sign new Ibrox contract despite loss vs Celtic last week

Rangers remain open to offering James Tavernier a contract extension despite what has proved to be a mixed season for the captain at Ibrox.

The 34-year-old missed his penalty during Rangers’ shootout defeat to Celtic in the Scottish Cup final last weekend, leading to growing frustrations from the fans.

However, that is unlikely to have had any immediate impact on his future, as he remains part of Danny Rohl’s squad and plans for the future.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Rangers would like to keep Tavernier with contract talks scheduled to take place.

Tavernier’s role as a leader both on and off the pitch means he remains part of Rohl’s plans, despite what could be a busy transfer window for Rangers.

Rangers make new James Tavernier contract plan

Football Insider revealed last month that Tavernier’s future at Rangers is still uncertain, with contract talks delayed amid doubts over his age.

However, he has made 45 appearances already this season and remains a crucial influence on the pitch with his goal and assist tally impressive as ever.

His influence as a long-serving Rangers player and captain also makes him crucial to Rohl’s plans, and there is an expectation he will be offered a new deal.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “Yeah, I don’t think obviously that cup exit will have any sort of effect on his long-term future at Rangers.

“Tavernier is still a key player there with how much he contributes with goals and assists as well.

“He’s played so many games this season, he’s club captain as well so he’s got a big influence on and off the pitch.

“I think Rangers ideally would like to keep him. It’ll all depend on how long they’re willing to offer him in any new contract.

“But as I said, I think the preference for both would be for Tavernier to sign a new contract.

“Rangers would like to keep him and if there are the right offers, I’m sure Tavernier will be happy to extend his day at Ibrox as well.”

How does Tavernier feel about extending his Rangers stay?

Rangers remain keen to hand their captain a new contract, and there is also a feeling he would like to extend his stay and end any uncertainty.

Brown told Football Insider on 9 March that Tavernier is keen to sign a new contract at Rangers and hopes to reach an agreement in talks with the club.

The 34-year-old hopes to finish his career at Ibrox, despite seeing his playing time reduced in recent weeks under Rohl’s management.

Given his age, the length of any potential contract offer may prove to be a sticking point, but all parties are keen to work towards an agreement.

Rangers remain locked in a title race against Celtic and Hearts, although they remain six points behind the league leaders, and their efforts are focused on the pitch.
