Stanley Nwabali: New East African club to challenge Simba SC, Kaizer Chiefs for Super Eagles’ No. 1

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has recently attracted significant interest from clubs in East Africa, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 29-year-old shot-stopper has been a free agent since February, after a surprising decision to terminate his contract in the middle of the season.

The move caught many off guard, as despite being linked to bigger African clubs in recent years, Nwabali had never previously indicated any dissatisfaction during his stay at Chippa United. In fact, he was the captain and was consistently producing some top performances for them.

But since his departure, finding a new home has proven difficult. Although he has been linked to South African Premier League giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, neither club has made a formal move to sign him.

Also, Tanzanian powerhouse Simba SC has been frequently mentioned as a potential landing spot, the future of the former Enyimba man remains uncertain. However, a new contender from Tanzania has reportedly entered the race to challenge Simba SC for his services.

According to Footy Africa, Tanzanian top-flight side Azam FC have emerged as a serious suitor for Nwabali.

Azam is one of Tanzania's top clubs. They notably won the league title in the 2013/14 season, but they have failed to win it since then.

However, Azam FC are eager to establish themselves as a dominant force. Securing the services of Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper would serve as a massive statement of intent. And financially, the top Tanzanian clubs are well-positioned to meet the salary expectations of a player of Nwabali’s caliber.

Despite the mounting interest, a quick resolution for Nwabali's situation is unlikely. Nigerian football fans will likely have to wait until the summer transfer window before the Super Eagles star's next destination is confirmed.
