Stefan Borson: Tottenham have now proven they have ‘Huge' doubts over Premier League safety

Tottenham Hotspur have “huge doubts” over their Premier League status after extending their season ticket renewal deadline.

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the majority of Spurs fans are still likely to extend their season tickets if the club are relegated to the Championship.

It was revealed last month Tottenham have frozen their season ticket prices for the 2026-27 campaign following consultation with supporters’ groups.

Meanwhile, the north London giants sent an email to season ticket holders last week informing them the deadline for renewal has been extended until 7 June due to the threat of relegation.

Why Tottenham fans don’t want to sacrifice season tickets

Igor Tudor picked up his first point since replacing Thomas Frank as Spurs manager last month after Richarlison’s late goal earned a 1-1 draw at Liverpool on Sunday (15 March).

However, relegation still remains a realistic possibility, with Tottenham instantly losing more than £60million in revenue if they drop down to the Championship.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed the club’s decision to extend the season ticket renewal deadline at their 62,850-capacity stadium.

“I think it’s commercial reality,” said Borson.

“They’re not being stupid about it. It would be disingenuous for them to promote next season as being definitively a Premier League season. The fans would not buy that anyway.

“The decision on next season for most fans probably won’t change. I might be slightly delusional in my analysis of this situation, but I still think that if they were relegated and they were showing the right momentum, that people would continue to buy season tickets.

“I think there would be a belief that it was going to be a one-year stay in the lower division. They would not want to sacrifice their season tickets. A lot of these people obviously sit with friends and family that have built up relationships over many years.”

How many Tottenham fans will cancel season tickets after relegation

Borson insisted less than five per cent of the current season ticket holders are likely to decide against renewing if Tottenham are relegated.

“I just very much doubt that people are going to say, ‘Well, I’m not going’,” said Borson.

“Now, clearly you will see some churn. You will see some people saying, ‘That’s it. I’ve been meaning to quit for ages anyway. This is the decision, and I am never going again’. There will be a group of that. I would think it’s way less than 5 per cent of the season ticket base would do that, so the vast majority will renew.

“But likewise, the commercial reality dictates that you don’t go to people now and say, ‘Great, here’s a fantastic offer for next season’s Premier League season ticket’ when you’ve got clearly huge doubts over which division you’re going to be in.

“As I say, it’s the responsible thing to do to prevent winding up the supporter base even more than they have done already with performances on the field.”
