Sunderland: Abdul Fatawu transfer a no-brainer as Leicester green light cut-price £20m sale
Sunderland will surely reignite their pursuit of Leicester City winger Abdul Fatawu as he prepares to leave the King Power Stadium at the end of the season.
The crisis-stricken Foxes are already taking measures to cut their costs ahead of next season, and they have identified a sale of the 22-year-old as a simple way to raise funds in the summer.
The East Midlands outfit are also planning to cut their wage bill drastically for 2026-27, and that is set to mean saying goodbye to their nine-goal star at the end of the campaign.
Fatawu has become a prized asset for Leicester in recent seasons, with Sunderland trying and failing to sign him in each of the last two transfer windows.
The Black Cats may have been unsuccessful on that occasion, but it could be set to be a different story for them this time around, with Leicester ready to play ball over a deal.
Abdul Fatawu deal a snip at £20m
Football Insider revealed back in January that Sunderland were eyeing up Fatawu once again, as they prepared to act on their long-term interest in the winger.
The Wearsiders have been consistent admirers of the youngster, and Leicester’s ongoing plight has left the door ajar for a deal to be struck this summer.
Stats Fatawu (2025-26) Mundle (2024-25) Apps (Starts) 38 (37) 22 (17) Goals + Assists 16 7 G/A per 90 0.45 0.43 Chances Created per 90 1.33 1.62 Shots on Target per 90 0.73 0.75 Successful Dribbles per 90 2.68 2.19
It is surely now a no-brainer for Regis Le Bris and Co. to pursue a deal for Fatawu this summer, considering that his current club have already made him available for a cut-price fee.
Leicester will accept offers in the region of the £20million mark this summer, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon account, which is a substantial reduction from the £30m release clause in his contract.
That represents excellent value for one of the Championship’s most creative players this season, and Sunderland would be silly not to try and take Leicester up on a deal.
The former Sporting CP academy star is clearly ready to make the jump to the Premier League, and he would be better placed to make an impact at the Stadium of Light than some of the club’s current wide options.
Fatawu move would finish Romaine Mundle at Sunderland
Romaine Mundle was one of the heroes of Sunderland’s promotion-winning season last time out, but he has massively struggled to make the step up to the Premier League this term.
The influx of new arrivals last summer has left the 22-year-old on the fringes of Le Bris’ squad, and he has started just two league games since the beginning of the season.
He is already firmly behind the likes of Chemsdine Talbi and Enzo Le Fee on the wings, and with Mundle entering the final two years of his contract in the summer, Sunderland will surely look to offload him.
A move for another winger in Fatawu would completely finish any chance of the Spurs academy starlet being able to work his way back into the fold, and if that was the case, then it would make sense for him to move on.
