TFG close in on Everton achievement that would mock Roma - Italian outlet

The Friedkin Group could be looking forward to Champions League football at the rate at which Everton are travelling, but the same cannot be said for Roma.

This decade, more often than not, Everton have been fighting to stave off relegation from the Premier League.

But since TFG’s takeover of the club in December 2024, Everton have been on an upward trajectory.

David Moyes returned to the Toffees midway through last season and guided the Merseyside outfit to a 13th-place finish with 48 points.

Fast forward to the present, and Everton are in with a shout of securing Champions League football next season. But right now, Roma, who are also run by TFG, are unlikely to get that chance.

Everton eye early Champions League qualification

This is Everton’s first full season under TFG’s ownership, and at this rate, they are ahead of schedule.

The Toffees spent around £100million on players last summer but other than securing a loan for Tyrique George from Chelsea, following Jack Grealish‘s injury, January was very quiet.

According to Calcioe Finanza, Roma’s owners have invested around £870,500,000 in the club since being sworn in during August 2020.

In that time, Roma – who are sixth in Serie A and sit four points behind fourth-placed Como – haven’t been in the Champions League, as TFG consider the investment for the construction of a new stadium in Pietralata.

The report adds that it would be “mocking” if the American family managed to achieve their Champions League goal at Everton after less than 18 months in charge.

They state TFG have invested just under £609,350,000 at Everton so far, with some of that going towards Hill Dickinson Stadium.

What makes it easier for Everton, however, is that the top five English teams can reach the Champions League, whereas in Italy it is the top four.

Everton primed for Europe

It may be a bit premature to talk about Everton qualifying for the Champions League when they are not even in the top seven in the Premier League right now.

The Toffees are eighth in the division, behind Brentford on goal difference. The Bees are in pole position to secure Conference League football next term, whereas sixth-placed Chelsea are on course to end up in the Europa League.

Rivals Liverpool occupy the last Champions League qualification spot in the English top-flight in fifth, with the Reds just three points ahead of Everton with seven games to go.

Everton are punching above their weight right now but if they fail to qualify for Europe, many will see that as a failure from this position.

But Fulham, Brighton, and Sunderland are also snapping at their heels in the race for Europe.

Incidentally, Roma have fallen behind Como and Juventus in recent weeks, as three losses in their last four halt their Champions League charge. It’s all to play for in the coming weeks for both sides, as the prize of Champions League football looms large.
