Tom English shares 'significant' Rangers transfer update he's been told from Ibrox insiders

Tom English believes Rangers will reinvest in their squad despite bringing in 14 new players over the summer.

Rangers are out of the Europa League after Thursday’s 2-1 defeat to Ferencvaros, and criticism has once again fallen on the players.

Kevin Thelwell’s disastrous role in the recruitment not only led to his sacking but has also contributed to an incredibly toxic atmosphere that has plagued Ibrox.

The majority of the new arrivals have been underwhelming, despite the fact Rangers recorded a net spend of £20million to bring in players from all across Europe.

After another disappointing performance in Europe, English has been told that Andrew Cavenagh will back Danny Rohl in the January transfer window.

Rangers set to back Danny Rohl in January transfer window

Russell Martin’s disastrous reign in Govan lasted just 123 days as he oversaw Rangers‘ worst start to a domestic season in 57 years.

Rohl has steadied the ship, although it’s clear that the Bears are in desperate need for proven players who can deal with the pressure of playing in G51.

Speaking on BBC Sportsound on 12 December, English claimed that there is bound to be a lot of movement in January.

He said: “I was speaking to somebody last week at the club. They will go again in January. I think they may go again in a fairly significant way.

“I think they need to, but they need to get players out as well because there’s – I don’t want to be disparaging – a number of players at that club who are not contributing and will not contribute, and they need to move out.”

While the squad does need to be strengthened, outgoings are just as important, and there are already a few players who have their sights set elsewhere.

Rangers have multiple issues to address in January

Simply put, the method of signing young players with the potential to be sold for a profit in the future has failed spectacularly.

The table below showcases just some of the signings that have played a role in this season’s struggles, and it’s no shock that Thelwell was dismissed, given some of these astronomical fees.

Player Fee
Youssef Chermiti£10m
Thelo Aasgaard£3.5m
Emmanuel Fernandez£3.5m
Oliver Antman£3m

Additions are needed in defence, midfield, and attack, and Rohl will also be wary of which players he can afford to let go.

Nico Raskin is linked with a move to Besiktas, while Djeidi Gassama has attracted interest from Villarreal.

The Belgium international’s sale would be a huge blow, and there are already players who arrived in Govan just months ago that could be set for the exit door.

January will be a crucial month that could determine the failure of Cavenagh’s tenure, and every move that is made must turn out to be successful if he wants to alleviate any of the pressure he is facing.
