'Unbelievable' - Alan Shearer loves what David Moyes is doing as Everton hunt European football again

Alan Shearer believes that David Moyes is doing an “unbelievable” job at Europe-chasing Everton.

After the Scot guided Everton to 13th in the Premier League last term, many Everton fans may have hoped for a mid-table finish for their first season at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

While that may yet come to pass, for now, Everton are dreaming of returning to European football for the first time since 2018.

Their 2-2 draw with fellow European hopefuls Brentford on Saturday kept them eighth in the table, as the race for continental football next season intensifies.

Everton take on rivals Liverpool next Sunday, but ahead of that clash, Newcastle legend Shearer has heaped praise on Moyes and his players.

Everton ’embracing’ European chance

Everton twice came from behind to grab a point at Brentford, with Beto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall getting on the scoresheet.

The Toffees are developing a habit of being hard to beat on their travels, in addition to scoring very late on in games to salvage results.

Everton had 45 per cent possession, 14 shots to 17, and an Expected Goals tally of 1.52 vs 2.37. Despite that, they claimed an important point as they stayed level on points with Brentford.

Chelsea are a point ahead in sixth and have a game in hand, but just three points are separating them and 10th-placed Bournemouth.

Few would have predicted Everton or Brentford would be in this position so close to the finish line. And Shearer thinks it is right that Toffees fans get excited about their situation.

“They should embrace it. No one expected them to do what they’re doing,” he said on Match of the Day. “They are having the time of their life, they are really enjoying it, as you can see in their football.

“He should talk it [Europe] up, he’s doing an unbelievable job.”

Everton’s testing run-in

While Brentford had more possession, chances, and a higher xG, Everton had more shots on target (seven vs four), and Jordan Pickford had to make just two saves compared to Caoimhín Kelleher’s four.

The Bees did hit the woodwork twice, though, as they twice let their lead slip at Gtech Community Stadium.

Now that Everton have that tough fixture out of the way, they can look ahead to their final six games of the league season.

As their remaining matches show, Everton have tough games against Premier League title hopefuls Manchester City and Champions League-chasing Liverpool.

They also take on West Ham and Tottenham, who will be fighting for their lives to stave off relegation.

At this stage, there are no easy games. But if Moyes’ side can beat Liverpool next weekend, Everton’s European dream could start to become a reality.
