View: Coleman can give Everton and Ireland a parting gift in double duty transfer role

Seamus Coleman could play facilitator for both Everton and the Republic of Ireland when it comes to Chelsea striker Liam Delap.

The Toffees will be in the market for a centre-forward in the summer window, with Thierno Barry and Beto desperately needing an upgrade.

David Moyes has been linked with numerous names over the past few months, but right now his focus will be on securing European football.

Among those links, Delap is the player with the most Premier League experience, a major plus in recruiting him.

However, with plenty of interest circling the Chelsea forward, an Everton transfer could be aided by Coleman, who has more than one reason to contact Delap.

How Seamus Coleman could help club and country seal Liam Delap agreements

Delap has struggled to break into the Chelsea team, with the form of Joao Pedro keeping him out.

In turn, this has also affected the 23-year-old’s international hopes, with his chances of making the England squad extremely slim.

Delap, however, does hold dual nationality due to his grandparents hailing from Ireland and, of course, his father Rory Delap being capped 11 times by Ireland.

Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has not ruled out the chance of Delap declaring for Ireland, stating via Irish Independent: “He hasn’t played for England, and it doesn’t look like he is going to the World Cup. He looks like he is far away from that, but, again, it is his decision.”

Meanwhile, assistant John O’Shea said: “Let’s wait and see.”

Coleman could now play an interesting role in regard to Delap, seeing as Everton also hold interest in signing Delap.

The Toffees defender could simultaneously try and convince the 23-year-old to declare for his nation and come to Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Of course, with Coleman’s contract expiring this summer at Everton, it would ultimately be a parting gift for the Blues.

Chelsea transfer may push Liam Delap out

Everton’s hopes of landing a deal for Delap are further increased due to Chelsea’ imminent signing of Emmanuel Emegha.

The Stamford Bridge outfit agreed to a deal in advance for the Dutch forward from Strasbourg in September.

Of course, with Liam Rosenior being the manager of Strasbourg then and now at Chelsea, Emegha could very well rise through the pecking order quickly.

Ahead of the summer, Delap has plenty to think about for both club and international levels, and who is to say Coleman or even O’Brien cannot nudge him in a particular direction?
